Rosie and Bronte her daughter and me.
J took this corker of a picture the other day.
I am leading with Bronte and wearing my new walking/ gardening jacket. It cost me 4 Euros in a charity shop and it's like new. Sometimes you have to put the boat out and splash the cash!😀
We met up with number 2 son and his Golden Retriever Rosie who happens to be Bronte's mum.
He moved out a couple a months ago. He's 24 and old enough to stand on his own 2 feet. But I still feel a wee bit sad when he leaves us.
Goodness knows how parents feel when their children emigrate to far off places like Australia or Scunthorpe?
Any road. He liked the Greenway. All 25 million Euros of it. The jewel in North Kerry and Limerick's jewel in their crown. "Follow the tarmac road".
He's going to bring his girlfriend to see it some time. He couldn't get over how friendly the walkers, runners and cyclists are greeting each other. Not to forget how the flat terrain is so easy to walk, run or cycle.
The Greenway draws me back again and again. There is a lot to be said to be able to walk without cars and traffic.
The days of walking on the roads where I live have gone and I sometimes feel trapped. That's the downside of rural living in the twenty first century.
When I looked at this corker of a photo. The theme tune from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly began to play in my mental jukebox:
I gave up my cycle because I was unhappy with the car drives on our local roads, we got the bikes when we had our camper van, lovely to stay in New Forest and cycle the tracks. We do have pavements here, but are lucky to be able to walk to the shore.
ReplyDeleteNo pavements where I live Marlene. We have the Sherps Head Way right next to where I live. This is hilly landscape and it's very isolated. I rarely if ever see anyone on my walks and dogs aren't allowed. On the Greenways you meet people and there are signs with phone numbers to hire bicycles. The Greenways pass through towns and villages where you can shop or stay in a hotel or catch a bus and there are a few cafes along the Linerick Greenway at the old railway stations. It's good to keep fit on a flat and even surface.
DeleteSheeps Head Way even!
DeleteThat's a great photo Dave. I love the Greenway. Great way to give pleasure to the people, a walkway on the old railway.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rachel. There are lots of Greenways being repurposed from old railway lines and even new walk ways being developed in rural areas in Ireland.
ReplyDeleteWe have Marriott Way in Norwich which goes 26 miles. It is not in my vicinity and I have never been on it but it is a great walk path for those who live in that part of Norwich.
DeleteI just checked it out on You Tube Rachel. It looks well worth a visit. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhen we first moved into our old house 33 years ago we could easily walk along our lane in peace and safety. It is now far too dangerous. Even though we now live in a town it feels much safer for walking and we do have the fields and green footpaths behind us.
ReplyDeleteHas Winston (Number 2 son) moved far away? It's nice that he still wants to meet up for a stroll with his aged parents.
ReplyDeleteIt was the same when we moved here twenty four years ago JayCee. Governments don't seem to be bothered about infrastructure in rural areas. People become car dependent and the days of walking along country main roads are no more. Sounds like you made the right move moving closer to town JayCee.
ReplyDelete66 miles away YP. A long way by foot or two bus journeys via Cork city.
ReplyDeleteI guess he has either moved for work or for a woman (unless of course he is gay). I hope he's happy with his decision - such a long way from parental control or advice.
DeleteFor independence and to live with his girlfriend YP. He will always be welcome back. Everyone's got to grow up and fly the nest I suppose.
DeleteBless him! I hope it all works out for him and his girlfriend.
DeleteThanks YP.
DeleteFlat terrain..... I wish. I tell myself that walking up the hills makes me stronger. And more tired.
ReplyDeleteYour Greenway is a marvel. Nice to be out enjoying it
I get tired of walking the hills above us Linda. It's worth the climb and the spectacular views of the two views are awesome. It's great walking down the hills.
ReplyDelete45kms of flat tarmac Greenway to walk, run or cycle on. It's a credit to the people who thought of it, repurposed it and the original railway workers who constructed the Tralee to Limerick railway line.
Traffic free and flat sounds perfect. There are many road where I won't ride my bike around here.
ReplyDeleteI know Jules. They could easily make marked off pedestrian and cycle lanes but they won't.
