Leeks and Japanese onions after I hand weeded them yesterday.
Once again my repurposed baths and plastic oil tanks prove to me that you do not need to have a veg plot or allotment to grow your veggies. All you need is a container to grow them in. You could even grow them on concrete?
Don't worry about allotment waiting lists. Get yourself some second hand plastic oil tanks or baths!
They are flying it with mixed sunny and rainy April weather plus constant hand weeding and liberal top dressing them with the pelleted chicken manure.
Some of the leeks look they are about to grow flower heads and go to seed. I could let them and collect the seed to sow next year. But I won't I will buy some.
Any one got any good leek recipes please? We have made lots of potato and leek soup this year:
Leek and potatoes soup with homemade soda 🍞.
Leeks and potato soup with home made bread, is always a 10 from me.
ReplyDeleteI must sow my leeks or buy some.
DeleteYes it's very nice Marlene. Winter veg like swedes, cabbage, sprouts and leeks are definitely worth sowing and planting this month and next.
ReplyDeleteI don't eat swede or sprouts, so won't be planting any, cabbage are already in, and leeks I will start next week.
DeleteHow long do leeks take to germinate? Mine seem rather reluctant
ReplyDelete7 - 14 days GZ. I might buy some if the potting shed/ greenhouse/ writing /reading room doesn't get constructed in the next couple of weeks.
DeleteLeek, spinach and feta pie 😊😊
ReplyDeleteI bought some spinach plants at the weekend Linda. Thanks. Some West Cork buffalo cheese would go down really well.
ReplyDeleteLeek and potato soup...the best comfort food.
ReplyDeleteI agree Linda. Thanks.
DeleteYES. Everyone can grow something. Even ifs it’s only herbs
ReplyDeleteIt’s amazing what you can plant in a large pot.
Tomatoes with some spring onions and maybe even a little basil. You’ll have a salad in a pot in no time
Totally agree Angela. I once grew potatoes in a plant pot in upstairs window of a flat.
DeleteI don't think you can go wrong with a good Leek and potato soup.
ReplyDeleteWinter veg is well worth growing Jules.
ReplyDeleteI love leeks. Chop into two inch slices. Place in microwave dish with lid and a little water. Heat for four minutes at full power. Drain and put the chunks in a shallow oven dish. Smear a couple of chunks of butter across the top and grate some cheese on - preferably parmesan but any tasty cheese will do. Pop in a hot oven for half an hour turning once. Then gobble up like a pig, muttering "Oh Yorkshire Pudding's recipe is heavenly! What a smashing fellow he is!"
ReplyDeleteYes YP. We know the buttered leek microwave recipe. It is very good. Thanks.
