A Glimpse Of Glengarriff.

Another scene from Ireland for you to look at.  This is the Blue Pool in Glengarriff.  It's about thirteen miles from Bantry which is near where I live on the Sheepshead Peninsula in the very South of Ireland.  We visited Glengarriff the other day.  It was rather dull and overcast but I still managed to take these photographs.

You can board a ferry to Garnish Island from here.  It's micro-climate with a subtropical garden and even a sunken Italian garden..  There's even a Martello tower which the British built because they thought the French might invade here.  George Bernard Shaw wrote Saint Joan here.

Glengarriff had quite a few other famous holiday makers like Wordsworth and Virginia Woolf.  Maureen O Hara had an house here.  I use to see her parking her car in Bantry town centre and walk in the Bank of Ireland.  It was strange seeing an Hollywood legend doing things like shopping or going to the bank.  Have you met anybody famous doing their: messages?  That's what the locals call the shopping!

  1. In recent months I have hit celeb gold! lol. I saw the rather dirty looking Mark Owen from Take That in Lechlade, a few weeks later we saw Elle Macpherson in the same area.

I nearly wet myself when my friend pointed out Andrew Lincoln from the walking dead tv series walking dogs near Oaksey, as we went by in the car. She lives there and wouldnt stop so I could gauwk at him. I wouldnt of asked for his autograph as I am a bit too shy to do that.

And then I hit Poetry Royalty (to me), when I saw Pam Ayres walking her little dog Izzy. I was like a rabbit in the head lights. She was so nice and started talking to us. I said my name to her when my Walking friend was chatting away as she lives in her village. She stuck out her hand and said "I'm Pam". in her west country voice. I couldnt get the smile off of my face. and like an idiot I said "I know". What a prat I am. I have seen her at the theatre before when she does her reading, 3 times. You could therefore say I am a little bit of a fan. I still feel like an idiot now!

  2. Thanks for that Sol. I wouldn't know some of today's famous celebrities. I remember Pam Ayres when she won Opportunity Knocks. Now I am showing my age.

The singer Donovan walked passed me once in Bantry. I never spoke but I think he knew I recognized him. Funnily enough I was watching a tv programme about him last night. He was talking about the Beatles. I would love to have talked to him about John Lennon.

    Thanks Sol.

  3. I've met Hugh FW many years ago and my neighbour is one of the experts on bargain hunt. That's my lot though I'm afraid!

    1. You name dropper Kev. I think HFW is the John Seymour of the 21st century. I loved River Cottage and he's done some marvellous work with the Landshare and war on waste themes.

I have met a couple of famous ex footballers and I have met some rock performers and politicians like Barbara Castle.

  4. Well I did once get Frank Ifield's autograph! Does that count? I was a strapping eighteen year old lass, working near St Paul's Cathedral in London, and he was filming across the road. Encouraged by the receptionists in my place of work, I plucked up the courage to ask for his autograph. I remember standing there with the most sickly grin on my face while I waited for him to stop filming. He was polite, gave me the 'once over', did the autograph, and then got on with filming. I kept the autograph for years. Frank Ifield was the Australian singer who did yodelling as well.

    1. I Remember You? Good on you for plucking up the courage to ask for his autograph Vera. I have walked past a few famous celebrities and never had the courage to speak to them. They are only human though. Aren't they? Thanks!

  5. The boot's on the other foot. I have to confess that I've been asked for my autograph a couple of times. Both times the peron asking thought I was a footballer. But curiously not the same footballer. One had me playing at Man Utd. and the other swore I played at Bolton Wanderers.

  6. Hi Gwil. That's quite a compliment to be compared to a professional footballer. You obviously keep yourself in good shape. Not done any walking since my 100 miles foot blisters trip. Thanks!

  7. Hmm...? Might go on a ramble this weekend Gwil. It's awful when you come to the conclusion that the old body isn't up to long distance hiking.
