" Four Legs Good. Two Leg Bad." New Arrivals Down On The Smallholding.

We haven't had any livestock on the smallholding for a while.  Cattle prices are crazy at the moment. It's only a few days from the single farm payment application form-deadline.  So farmers are mad for cattle and sheep to make up their numbers before the 15th of May.  We decided to buy some sheep.  Five Suffolk cross ewes and six lambs to be precise.

Some photographs for the sheep.  You can see the bay (Bantry) in the background.

"I'm the king of the castle, bucket."
Makes you want to play "Sheep" by Pink Floyd doesn't it?

  1. One of my friends from long ago used to calculate the number of sheep he put into a field at 1 per every 20 square foot. How do you calculate it ?

    1. Hi Heron. They ("who are they") reckon on 5 day sheep to the acre for all year round pasture. The grass is very long in the field we put them in and they should be there for over a month, may be more. Thanks!

  2. Your grass is looking green and lush Dave. Here in West Suffolk we are desperate for rain. I'm not sure my grass for my small flock will see them through the summer unless the weather changes.

    1. Thanks Phillip. We have had an unexceptionally dry month or so here in West Cork. I heard about on the English news the other night. Our weather breaks on Thursday with showers. Hopefully you will get rain soon. How many sheep have you in your flock Philip?
