Catching The Ferry To Get To Work.

I took these photographs the other morning on my way to work.  It's only a temporary job but I am enjoying the ferry rides and the work on a oil terminal on an island in the bay.

My job title is: General Operative.  They are replacing the metal plates in the massive oil tanks.  My job is to dig out gravel and rake sand for the new plates to lie on.  I had to complete a: Safe Pass course, a Manual Handling course and a Confined Spaces course before I could work on the island and go inside the empty oil tanks which are an acre wide.

The money is great and I am working with a great set of lads.  I get stick when United lose and I give it them back when their team loses.  It's good to get away from the isolation of the countryside and see people and share stories and jokes and to be happy working for a good wage.

Every morning I sit outside on the deck and look at the scenery and my mental jukebox starts playing in my head:

I would love to see Styx play live.  My friend who lives in Warsaw once saw them play in Berlin.  Kansas were on the same bill.  What a concert.  At least I have seen Kansas though.  Is there any classic rock rock band that you would love to see live?

  1. Sounds like a good combination of everything Dave, and a bit of good company and banter. I like that Come Sail Away, I have never heard it before. What's gone wrong at United?

  2. Hi Rachel, you can't beat a bit of banter and a laugh and good company when you are working.

Theres a story on social media about an homeless man in America playing this tune on a street piano and now hes playing concerts and got his own place. I love ballad rock songs and bands like Styx.

I think United fans want traditional Cavalier attacking style football wingers not defensive and settling for the draw. The Arsenal are going well. Thanks!

  3. 'Come sail away' is one of my favourite songs, and introduced me to Styx who have fast become my favourite band although I would not go to one of their concerts.....too many people and queues for the loos.

....and a ferry ride to work, plus a day spent in good company, plus some money coming in....this should set you up nicely for the winter months ahead!

  4. A new vocation, how great is that. It must be a welcome change for you to have people to talk to while you work.

    1. Hi Valerie. It is great even though its only temporary. Rural living can be very isolated at times and its good to talk to other people. Thanks!

  5. Whiddy Island is where you are working - I think ? Nothing like a sea trip twice a day to remove the cob webs, many years ago I used to travel to the Isle of Wight each day and thoroughly enjoyed the novelty of the journeys.

    1. Could be Heron. It was quite choppy coming home tonight. The best thing about the ferry trip is its free. Thanks!

  6. This is delightful news! To get with people, chat, and kid around, and even make money, while doing it.

    Enjoy!

  10. Whiddy is well worth visiting Sean. We have visited Cape Clear, Sherkin Island and Dursey Island with the only cable car in Ireland between the island and the mainland.

Newcastle were two nil up after ten minutes. But Pogba and United somehow managed to turn in around. Onwards and upwards now I hope. Thanks!

    1. Yesterday a lorry spilled 23 tons of spuds when it tipped over in a field alongside an Austrian motorway. You should have been there Dave. It's reported that 50 volunteer firemen collected them all by hand.

  13. Good on the volunteer fireman Gwil. I watched English news the other night and it said spudatoes were 12 Euros a sack. Yikes me thinks!
