Plants From The Rare Plant Fair In Flower.

Do you  remember when we went to the Rare Plant Plant Fair at Glin Castle in county Limerick? We purchased 7 plants and I did divide them and made 37 new ones.  Anyway here's two of them that have decided to put on a show and flower.  Hope you like them?

Peltoboykinia Watanabei.  Eh?  I feel like the football fan at a Borussia Monchengladbach football match who shouts: "Give us a B.."

Its from Japan and its an hardy perennial.
Saxifraga Stolonifera.  Its also from Asia.  Like most of our vegetables its not native to Europe.  It's got hairy leaves.  The plants-man who sold it us told us that any plant with hairs on its leaves will thrive next to the sea.
Here is one of my Saxifraga plants.  They grow wild in Ireland and are often called: St Patricks Cabbages.  The most common Saxifraga is 'London Pride'.  Apparently the first plant to flower in the burned out Blitz London gardens were the Saxifragas and they are called 'London Pride' because of this.  They are a great symbol of resilience.

My hard plastic glasses case is next to the Saxifraga because I am tired of taking photos that are pitch black.  The wheelie bin sits proud in the veg plot and I fill it with water from the hose and fill up my watering can.

Do you have any unusual plants in your garden?

  1. Good you Dave, for propagating these plants and for knowing those long names. I have never heard of any of these, naturally. Presumably theyll do well outside all year round?

  2. The plant names are clear as mud to me Linda. I bought them because they are unusual and I have never seen them before. Hopefully they will like living in the Irish countryside next to the sea. They are perennials and should come back every year. Thanks!

  3. Glad they are showing results. It is nice to have a bit of mystery in the wait. Most of the things in my garden are a mystery, or were a mystery, as all except the lupins were already here when I moved in. Some things I don't know the names of but they come back every year even after the year my brother thought he had helpfully cleared the border for me. I was pleased they all came back! Thanks Dave.

  4. You're right Rachel. It is nice to have mystery in the garden. Yesterday two hydrangeas and a rose that I had planted rooted cuttings of came into flower. I was delighted with them. I am trying to build up my collection of different perennials and shrub and vegetables. Thanks!

  5. I wish I had your gardening know-how. but I guess I'm not the only one in the world who can't pronounce some of the plant names or even recognise the plant.

  6. Hi Valerie. The plants origination fascinates me. Especially vegetables. There are not many of those that originate from Britain or Ireland. There are thousands of plants names. I often forget them if I don't see them often. Thanks.

  8. Thanks Philip. Its good to add new plants to the collection. I purchased some Japanese onions an Heucheras seeds on Sunday. They arrived by post yesterday. Couldn't believe how small the heuchera seeds were. The parsnips are thriving that you showed us how to sow and germinate. Thanks!

  9. in one of our cottages the garden has lots of geraniums (true geraniums not pelargoniums) I am waiting to autumn and then I am going to divide the heck out of them all to put in the main garden and in the others front gardens as they will fill out the borders. I did read somewhere you can divide them in 4, with the flower froth they are about 1m in spread. I will keep you posted on that. I have herbs, rainbow chard, kale and bok choi to add to the planters ready for a good nosh up at some point.
