A Day Out To County Kerry To Get A Taste Of Blighty..

We visited an off licence and Iceland in Tralee for Newcastle Brown  Ale and Heinz Beanz and  Sausages.  It's strange the food and drink that you miss from Blighty.  Especially English bitter and beans and sausages.
A pint of Newky Brown bitter in a barrel glass.  They only had two bottles. I can never understand why we can't get it over here anymore.  After all the supermarkets and off licences are full of beer from other European countries.  Notice Domino the cat sat on his cat kennel posing for a photo?

What food or drink do other expats miss?  I forgot to mention we also go some tins of Ravioli and some English cheese and some pork pies.

More pictures from  Kerry in another blog post.

  1. You got the sausages and beans like I did. I haven't a clue what I would miss if I couldn't get it. I am really quite flexible about what I eat believe it or not and will eat whatever I can get and the occasional glass of red wine.

  2. Yes you have got good taste Rachel. Bill Wyman said he missed Picallili when he moved to France. I love Ireland for the small population and Guinness. But I do miss English cheese and English bitter like Newcastle Brown. Thanks Rachel,

  3. When I have lived away from England, the main things I have missed have been pints of Tetley's bitter and mugs of Tetley's tea. Abroad I rarely drink tea because it is never the same as back home.

    1. We can get Tetley's tea bags but no Tetley's bitter or other bitters from the Midlands and northern England. Tesco's sell Spitfire and Speckled Hen beers. It always makes me laugh abroad when you hear people talking about their full English breakfast and how they don't like the local bacon and baked beans. There's not many that can make better baked beans than Heinz,

  5. We like a takeaway at least once a week. It was McDonalds for breakfast and a Shish kebabs last night. Roast beef made at home today with our homegrown Brussel sprouts.

  6. Breaking news... I have never been in McDonalds even though it's only up the road from me. I hear you muttering 'Shame On her'.

  7. It's cheap, clean and amazingly quick service. That's why we use it. Have you been in a Subway.

  8. I live in Scotland so when I go home to Ireland, I load up with everything you can think of, especially Barry's tea. When I go down to London to visit my daughter, the Tesco's near her has an Irish section. Not a lot in it but I can get the Barry's tea there.
Thank you for your blog. I always enjoy it. I lived in Listowel for a short while and loved it.
    Kindest regards,
    Maureen

    1. Hi Irish Maureen. Listowel is a lovely place. We often visit it when we are in Kerry. There are Aldi, Iceland and Lidl stores there too. We use to go in an Irish shop in Wythenshawe in Manchester when we lived in north and south Manchester for red lemonade and Barry's tea. Now I live in Ireland I miss English foods and drink. Kindest regards Maureen.

  10. Hi JayCee. It's funny what you miss when you live in another country. Where did you live abroad? I am sure you could write blog posts about it?

    1. Nowhere exotic or exciting. We spent 4 years living with my father in law in Tenerife after my mother in law died. That was 30 years ago now.

  11. Tenerife's sounds exotic enough to me. We dream of living in Portugal or at least have a little holiday home over there, especially in winter.

  12. Dave, I enjoyed the Don't Forget your Shovel post a lot. I liked the fact that the town has honoured Christie Hennessey with such a splendid statue. It reminded me of Russian ones in honour of the workers. I read about his life and how he could not read or write and moved to London to work on building sites. I may have even come across him when I lived in London in 1970. Who knows. I was late listening to the video because I was watching the John Constable programme. I went to comment probably just as you took the post down! Thanks for sharing it anyway, I liked it.

    1. Hi Rachel. Thanks for reading the post and I will post it again. I agree it's a great statue and it's great that Tralee remember him.

  13. I used to love those beans and sausages. I wonder if I would still like them....if I could ever get them here.
Now that Easter is coming up I would love a decent hot cross buns. Our London visitors brought some for me last year. Homemade just aren't the same.
I miss a good Chinese or Indian meal real fish n chips. You can probably get those in Athens but that's 'over the seas'

  14. Hi Linda. I saw Easter eggs for sale in the supermarkets in Kerry on Saturday. It's funny what food and drinks we miss. Thanks.

  15. My husband and I have been married for about 7 years now. We were happily married with two children, a boy and a girl. 3 months ago I started to notice strange behavior from him and a few weeks later I discovered that my husband was seeing someone. He started coming home late from work, he doesn't care about me or the kids anymore, sometimes he goes out and doesn't even come home for about 2-3 days. I did everything I could to correct this problem but to no avail. I became very worried and needed help. One day when I was surfing the Internet, I came across a website that suggested that Dr. Padman could help resolve marital problems, restore broken relationships, and so on. So I felt like I had to give it a try. I contacted him and he made a spell for me. Two days later, my husband came to see me and apologized for the wrongs he had committed and promised to never do it again. Since then, everything has returned to normal. My family and I live happily together again. All thanks to Dr. Padman. If you need a spellcaster capable of casting a spell that really works, I suggest you contact him. He will not disappoint you.
