Visiting An Air India Memorial on The Sheepshead Peninsula.

The other Sunday we decided to have a ride round the peninsula where we live  here in Ireland.  It's a beautiful  place on a nice day.   We drove through Durrus where my parents now sleep and on to Ahakista.  Just before we reached Ahakista we stopped at the Air India Memorial.  I haven't visited it for a few years.  Here's some photos:

The garden and memorial remembers the 329 people who died in a terrorist attack on an Air India plane  over the Atlantic off the Irish coast in 1985.  Every year relatives and friends revisit the memorial near where many of the victims  bodies where brought into Ahakista via boats.

It's a stunning beautiful setting overlooking Dunmanus Bay.  Somewhere to be quiet and look out to the sea.  We read out the inscription on the sundial and met a cyclist sat contemplating.  I felt a wonderful sense of peace.  The sundial inscription says:"Timeflies/suns rise and shadows fall/let it pass by/ love reigns forever overall"

If you're every visiting stop for a minute or so and look out to the sea.

  1. Ooh, you have reminded me of the Alcock & Brown Monument near Clifden in Connemara where we stayed many years ago. We came across it by chance while out walking. A very bleak and lonely position but very interesting to read about it.

  2. Oh I remember that day, a Sunday it was. A friend called to our door early, in tears because she was due to fly across the Atlantic later that day (she didn't). We held our baby kids close to our heart and for the next weeks, the people in the city and the county of Cork helped carry the grief, many visitors, many meetings, services, whatever people could think of.

  4. Here in Toronto there is also a memorial as most of the people on that plane were Canadian. It's down by the lake, not far from where I live so I have walked by it many times. A terrible tragedy.

  7. Oh that was such a terrible tragedy and took many years to unravel. It is a very complicated story behind it.

I remember the reports of the crash coming in. My mother had some ancient relatives over for the day, two very eccentric sisters, and we sat struggling talking to them and then we heard this news and we went quiet but they didn't and my mother said she wanted to listen to the news bulletin for a few minutes. I can remember it like it was yesterday. I didn't know this memorial existed. Thanks for sharing the photos Dave.

  12. Normal service has resumed Gwil. No true believer would kill anyone. Hope things are OK Gwil.

  13. Depends how you define a true believer Dave. I only see that true believers have been killing each other since religion was invented. I'm ok. We are still allowed out for exercise. I do a 5 km walk in the woods every morning.

  14. Gwill took the words from me, or perhaps the other way around. Wondering when more killing starts again in my country.
