Remember a few weeks weeks when I cut off the depressed and dying potatoes haulms and stalks?
We weren't sure if it was the dreaded blight or if they had just finished growing. We only grow early varieties and don't bother growing maincrop.
I went out this morning to dig up more new potatoes for tonight's tea:
Unearthing buried Solanum Tuberosum treasure.Careful with the long handled fork.
A bucket full of Homeguard new potatoes.
We always say our new potatoes are always ready at the wrong time of the year. When you find yourself saying:
" Is it hot or is it me?"
The sun definitely feeds you and our appetite diminishes and you eat less when you are getting older.
Are you harvesting your new potatoes?
We have a few left from our last dig, with one plant left to tip out. They have been very good so far, even though they were only ordinary shop bought (local) spuds that had sprouted.
ReplyDeleteI have grown potatoes by planting shop bought ones JayCee. I once grew them in a compost filled plant pot in a upstairs window of our flat. I knew an allotment holder who planted the eyes in potatoes skins and he had a successful crop of new potatoes. I must save some to plant in September for a Christmas crop. I will grow them indoors and protect them from frost with straw.
ReplyDeleteYou're definitely the Potato King of Ireland. Congrats on another decent pile of spuds
ReplyDeleteI dunno about that Linda. We seem to grow more potatoes, onions and leeks than anything else. I just they were ready in winter when it's cooler.
ReplyDeleteI harvest my new potatoes from "Lidl". Handily, they come in plastic bags and there's no digging to do either. Today's spuds were grown in Suffolk and they are in the pan ready to boil for our Sunday dinner. Yours look great Dave and probably taste more lovely than ours will do.
ReplyDeleteIf you go in Mark's and Sparks you can buy newly washed and chopped and peeled veg YP. Are there any farmer's markets near you. They are a great place to source fresh and organic veg. Thanks. It's been a great your for flowers and vegetables.
DeleteThe tops of my tatties aren't looking anywhere near ready..still no flowers yet.....unless they came and went without me noticing!!
ReplyDeleteAre they main crop varieties GZ? I might be worth unearthing one. Sometimes they don't all flower.
