A Metal Bench Made By Our Smallholding Blacksmith.

Number One son did weld and make and paint this garden bench for us the other week.

We even managed to paint some of the shed floor.
It cost me over one hundred Euros in steel and paint.  But it should last a long time.  Unlike the last metal garden furniture I bought.  It lasted two years.  Why is that everything you buy doesn't last?  Perhaps they should come with the label: 'Made to rust and break'?

  1. Great bench. Does he have a metal bending machine? My brother makes these and repairs lots of garden benches for people who have the bought ones that have rusted and broken!

    1. Thanks Rachel. Yes he's got a scroll bender, grinder and a welder.. Do you have one of your brothers garden benches? Would love to see a photograph of one of the benches.

    2. Yes, I will photograph. He has a metal bender for the ends and scrolly bits and then he mostly does wood for the seat. He also makes rose arches and that type of thing or anything that people want.

    3. I look forward to seeing the bench photographs Rachel. I love to hear about people making a living in the countryside.

    4. Is your wife going to make cushions for the seat ?

    5. I don't know Heron. It would make it more comfortable. But then the cushions would have to be waterproof. It's not really uncomfortable and it's good to have different benches in the garden when you want a rest or when the sun moves about. My wife spends her evenings knitting jumpers and cardigans for babies and toddlers and gives them to new mother's. Thanks.

    1. Thanks LA. Last year was the wettest ever in Ireland. Could do with some of your Greek sun.

  3. Crikey Dave, last summer a smallholding friend of mine made me a metal bench almost identical. The only difference is it does not have the curly finishes. It cost me two Saddleback weaners. I wanted a bench to go right next to the vegetable plots so that between work I could sit and admire my efforts.

    1. Crikey Philip. I love the bartering system, horse trading or even pig trading. You can never have enough benches in a garden. I often sit on my old baths rims that I use for raised beds. Thanks!

  4. bench looks ace. they are made from inferior materials and rust away. and really when you tyhink about it, it isnt in their best interest to make anything to last anymore. you have to buy another one dont you if it breaks... ;) unless you have a handy son to make one for you

  5. Hi Sol. Thanks! I will pass on your praise. We watched Dragon's Den last Sunday. Did you see it? There was this guy pitching a chain tightener. I asked my son why was some of it made of plastic? He said probably because it makes cheaper to make, its light and you have to buy another one! I don't know about that, but I know a lot of the stuff we buy will not last long. Its a throw away world, sadly.

How are things in Cornwall? I always wanted to live there but now its Portugal. I am Sagittarius and we always want change, sadly. Hope you're well? Thanks and blog soon Sol!
