The First Spuds Of Summer.

The wife was watering the potatoes in the polystyrene  welding packaging box yesterday in the polytunnel.  She decided to give the spud plants a thorough soaking.  Suddenly she shouts to me:

"I've got summat to show you!"

The power of the water from the hose had washed the soil/compost from the surface and we could see our our very first new potatoes!

That is a first.  Spuds ready on the 16th of May.

All gardeners have dirty finger nails.

Just in time for tea!

They grew in compost and I fed them with my nettle 'garden' tea.  They are delicious.  Are your potatoes ready yet?

  1. Did you earth those potatoes up? We have a few growing in our raised beds and I am concerned because space is cramped and earthing them up is going to be awkward to do.
Hope you enjoyed those potatoes! Vx

  2. That's great, Dave, and they look good as well. There's nothing like a freshly grown potato.

  3. Hi Vera. We didn't earth them up in the confined container. You could add compost to the raised beds. I am covering my rows with lawnmower grass clippings. I just let them go yellow first so they don't burn the potato stalks.

We did enjoy them last night for tea and made bubble and squeak with them and cabbage for dinner today. Usually when we harvest our new potatoes its too hot and nobody really feels like them. Thanks Vera.

  4. Hi Valerie. Freshly dug homegrown potatoes are in a world of their own. We noticed in Lidl some of the Organic vegetables are the same price as chemical grown ones. The carrots especially. Hope you're well. Thanks!

    1. They're delicious Tanza. All they have been grown in is homemade compost and watered with water and nettle garden tea. Thanks.

  8. Been years since I grew spuds, but when I did, we had to watch out for the two Cairn terriers who adored veggies of all sorts, and potatoes most of all. They would dig about in any disturbed earth looking for overlooked spuds.

    1. Hi Joanne. We grow them in the tunnel and outside in pots and in rows in the veg plot. The terriers are like pocket battle ships. Always up to devilment and brave as a lion. Border collies are another favourite of ours but not in the borders, of course. Would love to have seen the Cairn terriers hunting for buried potato treasure. Thanks!

  10. Hiya Gwil. Its annoying when that happens.

I love my polytunnel. Some times it gets very hot. Its a good place to garden even on showery days like today. I am dividing perennials and making new plants today. Thanks!
