We were at Monte Gordo train station waiting for a train to visit Ayamonte in Spain and J walked up the platform taking photos of Flamingos in the river:
Flamingos shouting mating calls like:"Are you putting the kettle on Elsie?"
I heard a West Yorkshire lady about my age say to her presumably grown up daughter:
"I haven't seen out like them. Have you?"
I could not think of a more appropriate saying. The Flamingos were a sight for sore eyes.
I had only ever seen them before in zoos and safari parks but never in the wild. Makes a change from seagulls and crows.
I have never see a flamingo in the wild. By the way Dave, I feel I should pull you up on your spelling young man! It's "owt" not "out" - I confirmed this by referring to my Northern English Dictionary.
ReplyDeleteYour reet YP. I could do with a Northern English Dictionary.
ReplyDeleteI saw first flamingo's at Slimbridge, a wildfowl trust, Gloucestershire, I was about 11 years old, on a school trip, they were the most exotic birds I had ever seen. I had a keyring with a slide in, when you held it to the light their pink plumage shone.
ReplyDeleteGreat flamingo memories Marlene. Like my post about feeding Polar bears at Belle Vue Zoo with Princess beef paste butties that my mum had made complete with added salt and pepper. They loved them!
ReplyDeleteThere can't be many railway stations with views like that!
ReplyDeleteNo JayCee. What a view.
ReplyDeleteWe have flamingos here too in a shallow estuary. They're usually too far away to get a decent photo but I love the thought of having them so close.
ReplyDeleteThey are great aren't they Linda?
DeleteFor “out” read”owt”.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteI have seen a few flamingos in the wild but they are always exciting to see. There are not a lot of pink birds in the world so they stand out.
ReplyDeleteThey do Debby. Rather like Pink the American Rock singer.
ReplyDeleteThey're beautiful. I was just as surprised when I saw the pelicans in St James's Park.
ReplyDeleteI have just Googled your pelicans in St James's Park Jules. You surprised me. I thought they were exotic birds and would not like our climate. Nature is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI saw them on a big nature reserve in Spain which was a place I went to when I was in Andasulia; may have been close to where you saw them across the border. They are a wonderful sight. I saw vultures as well swooping around and we went around in a Hafling vehicle which was fun with the drivers telling jokes and driving across the sand. Thanks Dave.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a great time Rachel. Thanks.
