I treated J and me, myself and I to a slap up chippy tea on Friday night.
However being a tight wad smallholder. I asked J to go and buy us one portion of fish and chips to share between us.
We unwrapped our fish supper and cut the fish in half with a knife. The meal was very filling and we both said we couldn't possibly eat a full portion.
I am not a fish eater except occasionally for the battered ones you get in England chippies or a chipper like they call it in Ireland.
In Scotland they cook Mars Bars in batter.
Remember this?
We always get a pensioners portions, still to much for me, happily hubby does love chips. No rain here today, just dull and cloudy.
ReplyDeleteThis post took me back many moons Marlene. We would have a chippy tea on a Friday in Lancashire when my dad got paid. Little old ladies would come in with a pot bowl and say: "Put em on gas range to keep me chips warm". People would ask for six penny's worth of chips. The chip shop man would ask who wanted fish and work like a dervish and battering and frying the fish. It was poetry in motion. My mum would buy me and my brother a big bottle of Strike Cola. People queued up for their chippy tea. Happy childhood days.
ReplyDeleteOvercast here. Thundery showers forecast. The gardens and fields need rain.
Wow that looks like a delicious Friday night dinner. I hope you had a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteIt looks pretty tasty. Warm greetings from Montreal, Canada.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda. I love Rush and April Wine.
DeleteThat looks like a lot of chips for a half portion!
ReplyDeleteMy dad used to get paid on a Thursday and would stop off at the chippy on his way home, cycling home with our tea wrapped up in paper . He would unwrap it and divide it up between the five of us, still warm and smelling of salt and vinegar. We three kids got to share one portion as they were so huge.
I think we had the same childhood culinary experiences JayCee. My dad got paid on a Thursday also.
ReplyDeleteFish and chip suppers are a lot more expensive than they used to be. Thankfully, portions are usually generous up north.
ReplyDeleteYou can't beat Blighty for great regional food and drink Jules. Yes the folk are great.
DeleteAs a new diabetic I have marked food envy ,
ReplyDeleteI'm sure John. It's the simple things in life that we like so much.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with being a tight wad. I hate wasting food, so a half portion each is perfect
ReplyDeleteI never did get to try the deep fried mars bar.
I’ll have to come back to Scotland one day so I can
Yes Angela. It's horrible to be over faced isn't it?
DeleteThe half fish and the chips needed mushy peas and a dollop of tomato sauce. They look naked without. Also - what about some tartare sauce too?
ReplyDeleteI forgot the mushy peas. You can't get good pies over here either. Who wants chicken and mushroom?
DeleteI prefer steak pies but no gristle or fat please!
DeleteMeat and potato pies are my favourite.
ReplyDeleteIt's not so much 'tightwad' as it is 'sensible'. If you weren't hungry after, well, then, you and J did it sensibly.
ReplyDeleteThanks Debby. They often give us far too many chips. Some people would throw them away. We save them for our four legged friends at home.
