The Day I Saw The Band I Had Waited Over Thirty Years To See.

People who follow this blog will know that from time to time I feature some of the rock bands I like and maybe even been lucky enough to see live.

Two years a go my friend invited me over to Warsaw to see a band I might be interested in seeing.  Who would this band be me thinks?  It was no other than the great American band: Kansas.  The band who I had always wanted to see but I never got the chance.  I had only waited about thirty years to see them. Well not really waited.  I didn't ever think I would see them.

Sure enough I emailed my friend back and a few months later (August 2014) and I was flying from Shannon to Modlin airport near Warsaw, Poland.  The great day duly arrived and my friend and myself walked up to the Progresja rock club.

It was a gorgeous summer evening and the Kansas bus was parked outside the concert hall.  My friend noticed the Kansas lead singer sat outside the tour bus on a chair.  He wondered if we should go over and meet the band.  I of course said nay and we just walked passed Steve Walsh.  Wish I had walked up to him now and said:

"I have flown from  Ireland to Poland to see you and it's only took me thirty years."

Not the flight time.  That was three hours.  I am talking of the time it took until I was lucky enough to see them play live.  I wasn't disappointed either.  They were fantastic!

Is there any band or singer who you would love to see live?  Would you fly three hours or more to see them.

Kansas have a new record out this year.  It's like listening to them in the nineteen eighties.  Here's a sample track for you to enjoy:

  1. How lovely to have caught up with them after all this time, like they say good things come to those who wait.

  2. Hi Dawn. Yes it was amazing to see one of the legendary rock groups that I always wanted to see. I noticed on the video it says Kansas are touring Europe again in 2017. Think I best start planning a trip. Wouldn't mind Prague or they could come to Ireland even? Thanks!

  3. Wish I could have seen the Beatles. Back in the 60s they visited nz to the usual riots. I was a bit young. We did see some live concerts when living in London. Chuck berry is the only one I can remember. Terrific show of course. Now I'm happy with YouTube and no crush and ear-splitting music....get that at greek weddings

  4. I would have liked to seen the Beatles too. Especially John Lennon. I really miss live music with us living in the countryside. You Tube is great but nothing replaces the live concert. I think the venue is also important. The Progresja where we saw Kansas is great because there are bars and no seats. So you can move about and even go up to the stage if you want. Yes I think I could do with a city break and see some rock music. Thanks LA.

  5. Hi Dave, a bit late coming here. I had to have a bit of a shut down on my blog due to some unwelcome blog visitors on my mothers birthday. Anyway. I love this post about going to see Kansas. I think it makes it even more special to have gone to Warsaw to see them. The You Tube clip won't play now because it has been cut off so I can't listen to them. There are so many bands I would have liked to have seen although when the venues started to get bigger and bigger I went off seeing bands a bit because I like smaller places best. Can't really explain all that in a comment but I guess you will understand what I mean. I saw Debbie Harry play in Central Park in New York and that is one good memory though.

    1. Hiya Rachel. Yes I thought something had happened on your blog. Hope you are up and blogging again soon. The Kansas Prelude Implicit Album Teaser works if you click on the writing or just go to You Tube to see it.

I like the small venues the best too. Although Roger Waters at Stadion Narodowy (national stadium) in Warsaw was incredible. Especially for the pyrotechnics. Emerson Lake and Palmer (Manchester Apollo) was another cracker. Lots of lots of great rock memories. All About Eve Glastonbury 1989 was also sublime. I bet Debbie Harry was amazing. Thanks!
