The veg plot is getting a bit overgrown and neglected at the moment.
I decided to weed several of the repurposed oil tanks/ raised beds and J will sow more vegetables when I clear them.
Beetroots.Cabbages.
Red cabbage with Alchemilla Mollis (Ladies Mantle) planted next to them. Yes I know A M is poisonous but we won't be eating them hopefully🤔.
The raised repurposed beds have been a great success and it's good to grow veg at knee instead of beneath your feet.
I also use old plastic baths with drainage holes drilled in them and I have old fish boxes for planters and some raised beds made out of old recycled decking planks.
I have a big pile of rotting fym and I will top up the beds with it this Autumn/Winter.
A big pile of fym sheeted up to keep the weeds out and heat it up to kill any weed seeds and aid decomposition of the mixed fym.The best thing about raised beds, container gardening means you can grow vegetables anywhere. Even on concrete.

ReplyDeleteThis is the only comment I can see JayCee.
ReplyDeleteOh well... I was just going to say that your beetroots are much further advanced than ours. We have just harvested our first new potatoes, grown in an old black plastic sack. They look really good so we are going to have them tonight. Can't wait.
DeleteI bought my Beetroots seedling in plastic modules from a garden centre JayCee. Yes we are having new potatoes 🥔 every night now. I always dig up too many and we cook too many. The dogs love them though.
DeleteOur raised beds were made from our decking planks they were only a couple of years old when we took them up, with a good plastic liner they will last for years. Much easier on my back and helpful as our garden us heavy clay.
ReplyDeleteRaised beds do increase drainage and soil depth Marlene. Especially if you top them up with fym and compost every year. Once made and filled they are very easy on the back and you can garden at knee or even waist height. I grow in the ground and also in raised repurposed oil tanks, plastic baths, old plank decking raised beds, IBC tanks and old barrels. I even use a Belfast Sink to grow my veg in. Raised beds are very useful also for disabled and old people.
ReplyDeleteMy pumpkins are finally growing and soon I hope they'll be spreading out all over the dry earth. They're coming up in an old compost pile all by themselves. Tomatoes are in raised pots and an old wheelbarrow. So much easier
ReplyDeleteGood idea Linda to grow Pumpkins on a compost pile. I grew carrots in a soil filled plastic wheelbarrow with a punctured tyre. I also use old rear wheel tractor tyres for vegetables planters.
ReplyDeleteI wish that my son had a raised bed in his attic in Fulham, London but instead he has got a bloody futon!
ReplyDeleteAre there any posh allotments in Fulham YP?
DeleteI started growing food in raised beds years ago. And I’ve never looked back
ReplyDeleteIt really does help with aches and pains. Keeping you in the garden longer and many years.
In Australia we have very hot summers, and we live on the driest continent So water is a big issue.
I’ve now got quite a few wicking beds to help conserve water and increasing the amount of time I have to go out and water.
Hi Angela. I have read about wicking beds and Hugelkultur gardening to con serve water. We get very wet autumn's and winter here in Ireland. Raised beds help a lot with drainage and increasing the soil depth and fertility.
ReplyDeleteThose beetroot look great. Neighbours chooks got into my garden yesterday and ate everything except shallots. Decimated all my Chinese cabbages so my plan to make kimchi has had to go on hold.
ReplyDeleteThanks TM. Sounds like you need some kind of fence with gale wind break netting or an electric fence. I had our piglets in my onions yesterday. I Googled Kimchi. It looks good.
