Back To Glass Bottles?

I haven't seen glass milk bottles for donkeys years have you?

That was until today in a supermarket in Bantry.  A West Cork dairy farm is giving you 70 Cents back when you return your empty milk bottle. Do you think we should go back to glass milk bottles?   Glass decomposes naturally unlike plastic which probably take hundreds if not thousands of years to decompose.

  1. I voiced the same question this week too, but apparently they take much more energy to produce. I'm not sure how accurate that is. I would love to have milk delivered in glass bottles though.

    1. Hello Jille. I also would love to have milk delivered in glass bottles. I live near quite a lot of dairy farmers and their milk is taken away by road tanker. Thanks for your comment

  2. I haven't seen a milkman around here for years. Those who drink milk seem to buy it at the supermarket in cartons. I don't drink it at all and don't buy it unless I need some for a white sauce for the cauliflower! I cannot really see the return of the bottle, heavy and breakable! I think the plastic they use these days breaks down more quickly than plastic of old.

    1. Hi Rachel. The milkmen use to sell milk, eggs, potatoes and orange juice. The electric floats didn't pollute the environment either. I think there should be more research into finding biodegradable plastic.

  3. Glass has got to be a healthier container. Beer still gets sold in bottles, why not milk? The bottles get reused over and over again. Very efficient, and broken glass can be recycled

    1. Hi LA. I have read that we shouldn't use plastic water bottles again. Glass can be recycled for many different uses including bottles and for resurfacing roads.

  6. We still have a doorstep delivery and yes in glass bottles. It's more expensive than supermarket but very welcome on a cold and icy morning. We have had this delivery for the last 36years and our milkman has never let us down

  7. the people down the lane here get milk and a few things delivered. It is apparently quite expensive compared to the supermarket, but it is convenient and they no longer drive due to age and their daughter takes them shopping once a week. Seems sensible to me.

Maybe once we move we could look into it for the Mr's milk needs. It would mean that I would only need to go to the supermarket once a month. He moans that the milk after being frozen doesnt take right? I am not sure... something about it being more like skimmed. The fat does seem to stick to the inside of the carton...?

    1. Hi Sol, I stopped putting milk in my coffee because I didn't like the plastic taste. I don't mind black coffee now but I still use milk for cooking. It would be great to see mobile shops or even a milk float. It creates jobs and provides a service to householders. Thanks!

  8. I can't understand why they ever stopped.

OK, the supersheds are cheaper but they don't deliver.

  9. Me neither Cumbrian. I think Tesco and Iceland will deliver your order if its over so much? Another great thing about having a milk man was that you had somebody to talk to when they delivered the milk or collected their milk money on a Friday night. Corner shops were/are the same. You communicate with people. Thanks!
