A Des Res In The Country?

I found this postcard in the cupboard/press the other day.  Rural Ireland and parts of Europe have lots of such properties.  Properties for sale for under 50000 Euros.  I saw a ruin on the Internet in the Algarve for 16000 Euros the other day.  In Ireland I saw a cottage with an acre of land for 25000 Euros.

Could you live in a caravan and renovate such a property?  I think I could if it was somewhere warm like Portugal.  Or would you just buy somewhere already renovated?  My dream would be somewhere with a little fishing pond.

  1. Dave you have a fishing pond very close to your back door. It is that stretch of water that lies between Sheepshead and Beara !

  2. Yes Bantry Bay and the Atlantic Heron. My dream is for a Coarse fishing ponds full to the brim with Tench, Perch, Trout, Carp, Roach, Bream... A couple of fishing pegs with lily pads and perhaps an Island. Somewhere to spend the rest of my days fishing with a few tins or bottles of beer in the keepnet. I see plenty for sale in France. Suppose we could dig one with a digger?

  3. Looks like a wonderful project for the right 'young' people. Sort of place I might buy if I had lots of money, not to buy the house, but to pay someone else to renovate and restore to my design!
Probably I'd pick a warmer climate than Ireland but on the other hand they speak a familiar language there!

  4. Hi La. I don't think it would cost a lot to renovate. There are lots of abandoned and renovation projects in Europe. I love Ireland for its beautiful scenery and it's so underpopulated unlike England. Our next project is going to be a little house in the Algarve. It's so cheap to live there and so warm. I would imagine Greece and your Greek Islands are the same. Thanks.

  5. Ha Ha Dave, you know me, the more run down the more I want to do it up. Save it. New builds give me the chills. Although I must admit this house has nearly broken me twice. We would never be able to live in a house like this had we not renovated others before this. We are too young to have benefited from the houses doubling in price nearly over night. The baby boomers have done alright in that sense. Everyone else has to scrap to get by now. One of my friends said her rent for her tiny 2 bed house in the main town nearby, costs £1150 a month! A MONTH! How are to ever save for a house, when they earn under the national minimum. I am glad we are a good team and can make do. Heck I have lived in a shed when the roof was taken off of house number 4 in Devon. Our shower was a camping one called a sun shower. We had no floors, no roof, the walls smashed back to lath. I worked the day, then at night and weekends we ran all of the pipes and wires. Then had the electrician and plumber hook them all up. My sister made blinds for us. My brother laid the floor boards back down. reinstated the kitchen after I painted it, he put in all the new skirting and achitrave. It took 6 months. On the 7th month we sold it. The shed was 6x8. We cooked on our previous gas BBQ and have a kelly kettle that one of Posh Boys family gave to us as they used one camping in Scotland. They are amazing by the way.

I dont know how many more renovations I have left in me. Lets hope one more.

If you leave me a comment with your email address in. Once the house is complete I will show you what we have really done with the house. Posh Boy is scared that someone will work out where we live if I show pictures of the finished project, if they look on rightmove. There are a lot of nutters out there, so I will do what I am told. Drop me your email. I will mark my email, OK to open from Sol. And leave a comment here. So you know it is ok to open and not nasty spam.

  6. Hi Sol. You sound like house improvements never daunt you. I can't believe how many cheap houses there are in Ireland and Europe. Some with land too. My dream is a lock up and leave in the Algarve holiday property. We are going looking there soon. Saw a ruin the other day for 16000 Euros.

Why not just take some inside the house photographs on your blog Sol? Thanks!

  7. Hi Dave as I said above, The Mr, thinks people will look for the house, as we will sell with an estate agent and the house pictures will appear on Rightmove. There is a blog that I read, or should I say used to read and I could tell where she lived from the pictures of the outside as I know the area. I had a troll on my last blog, hence I deleted it. Now I have an aversion to showing after pictures. As it worked out the troll was in the next town... nice right.

  8. Hi Sol. I can understand you not posting pictures of your house after that. Hope everything works out for you.

  9. I stayed in an ancient caravan. When I asked him where the ablutions were he led me round the back of the thing and handed me a spade and pointed into the forest . . . muttering something about snakes . . .
