A Walk On The North Side.

On Friday I went for a walk on my along the main road, along the boreens and over the hills and back home.  Its over six miles in total and here's some pictures I took on my saunter:

Honey bees get drunk on the pollen of one of our Catmint (Nepeta) plants in a plant pot.

A Fuchsia hedgerow.  I have seen similar hedgerows in Cornwall.  I often wondered how the Fuchsia became established in Ireland.    No doubt the Gulf Stream brought it?

Gunnera.  This invasive species originates in South America.  A few weeks ago this specimen was prostrate on the ground with parched leaves.  Now the regular rain service is back the Gunnera soon recovered.
The Strand looking over to Hungry Hill over on Beara Peninsula.    I often walked here with my mum and dad when we came here on holiday.  Bittersweet memories of such a beautiful place.

A brand newly erected signpost with no pictures or writing.  No doubt there will soon be photographs and tourist information about Bantry Bay.  Perhaps they will provide some public transport or litter bins for the tourists too?

Wild Montbretia in flower.  A lot of gardeners have the cultivated Crocosmia species in their gardens.  We have the red 'Lucifer' in ours.
Climbing up the hills and looking towards Glengarriff.  The white dot on the horizon on the right of the picture is the Marco Polo cruise liner that visited on Friday.   Glengarriff use to be a favourite holiday retreat for the like of Virginia Woolf, George Bernard Shaw and William Wordsworth, to name but a few literary giants.
A lonely boreen with grass growing down the middle of the road.  I didn't see a soul or even a passing car.
On the Sheepshead Way.  You can see the yellow finger-post markers pointing the way.

I hope you enjoyed the walk and photos?

  1. Enjoyed that walk Dave! Boreen was a new word for me. My daughter and her Irish husband are moving to Galway in the new year so hopefully there’ll be an opportunity to travel along some boreens in the future.

  2. Thanks Philip. I think Bo means cow in Irish and reen means lane? So its a lane wide enough for a cow. You will like Galway and Mayo. I have visited there a few times. Cong is good for the Quiet Man locations and I want to visit Kylemore Abbey for its walled gardens in Connemara. Thanks.

  3. I enjoyed the walk too. Fabulous scenery where you live. I saw a cruise ship in Lisbon, but can't remember if it was the Marco Polo. I can just see the dot you pointed out. I like the gunnera plant recovering. I have never seen it here. Thanks Dave.

  4. Thanks Rachel. I check the Bantry Marina website to see what ships visit the bay. The Gunnera is like a giant rhubarb plant. They have probably been dumped, washed up from large gardens. They are a moisture loving plant and thrive in Ireland. Thanks!

  5. Delightful!!!! I'd never make-it, on such a walk, myself, so thank you much for taking me along. :-)

"A lonely boreen"... Love the word, but not sure what it refers to..... Perhaps another word for 'vista'?

Oh to be able to see water. -sigh- Said as someone, very land locked.

Gunnera. Ugh... We are perfectly happy with our native rhubarb. And it takes a bit of care, to thrive. So is not invasive. :-)))

    1. Thanks wisp of words. Its a lovely place on a nice day and not the place to be when its blowing a gale. The boreens are the narrow country lanes. There is a lot of Japanese Knotweed in Ireland too. Its amazing how plants come from over the seas. Thanks.

  7. Thanks LA. A lot of the gardens here have New Zealand plants like Phormiums and Pittsoporum. Thetr leathery leaves tolerate the salt laden winds and rain. Thanks for your comment.

  8. Mrs G likes your photos of the walk. She said they give her desire . . . But she did t say for what. Well, I do too, I told her! I think she meant going for a walk in lovely scenery and fine fresh air such as you have. Regards to Domino!

  9. Hi Gwil. I wish I could get my missus to go walking with me. Go for it and get walking. Not that you need exercise with all your running and waiting for the muse to write your poems. Domino is going mousing on his nightshift in a minutes. He sends his regards. Thanks Gwil. You have a great sense of humour.

  10. I remember our walks in Ballycastle and watching the peat dig ready for winter days. Such happy times, pity they didn't last.

I have Montbretia, the orange coloured variety. Oh and the newly ordered plants are due next week.

  11. Thanks for your Ballycastle memories Valerie. Is it the town in Mayo or Antrim? We still buy turf for the range in winter. It's all machine turf though and not dug by hand, sadly.

The wild Montbretia is said to be a garden escapee. Lucifer is fiery red. They seem to call Montbretia, Crocosmia these days. Good luck with the new plants!
