We have noticed folk are buying supermarket food like its Christmas Eve. So we decided to blanch and freeze some of the cheap 49 Cents veg on offer:

Then plunge the vegetables in ice cold water for about three minutes. Our tap water from our well is ice cold and it comes from 220 feet down. Then put them into freezer bags or even plastic carrier bags. We often peel and chop onions this way when we have a glut of them in summer. They taste far nicer than frozen shop bought veg.
The way things are going at the moment with this with this mad shoppers buying spree. Means we are going to either blanch more or grow a lot more like we use to do before I became plant mad and filled up the veg plot with shrub cuttings and perennials.

The things I buy are not in short supply. I purchased a tin of tongue today, like I have on a regular basis. There was no shortage of this sort of food in tins. It is also quite clear that people in these parts do not like broccoli, there is always loads available in all the supermarkets I go in. I also do not buy it! I haven't got a freezer so I suppose my shopping habits are different to other people in general. Everything I need is still available so I shall continue to shop in my usual way.

ReplyDeleteI have blanched carrots, celery and parsley and have them in small bags in the freezer. So many greek dishes start with carrots, onions and celery. We have a kilo or so of onions and potatoes....beans, lentils and chickpeas.

These will be the free part of a raised veg bed. I need to get on growing some foods if this carries on. I moved another 6 barrow loads of chopped logs today. Need to keep doing that to clear the areas.

DeleteWe always have meat and fish and veg in our freezer, but we've put a loaf of bread and some milk to freeze today, just in case we get caught out on this 14day isolation. It's quite a long time when you start working out everything you will need to eat over a 14+ day period. At the moment I suppose I could do with a larger freezer, but the tall combined fridge/freezer we have suits us fine usually. I've never frozen chopped onions. How do they cook up - can you fry them?
