Onion Breakfast For The πŸ– πŸ– Pigs.

 I was weeding my raised beds the other morning and I decided to make room for the veg plants we bought the other day from a garden centre:

I also bought a day lily and a big pink Hydrangea which only cost me 7 Euros.  The veg trays were swedes, kale, cabbage and more Brussel sprouts   The bill was 35 Euros but we will have plenty of food from our winter veg. I haven't  built my greenhouse/shed yet and the veg trays were around 3 Euros.

I decided to empty one of the raised beds full of onions:

Beauties!


The nettles showed no mercy to my poor arms.  It was far too hot to wear long sleeves when weeding.

Instead of us eating the onions 🌰 I fed them to the pigs:
Pink pig.  You can see the bay in the distance. 
I think that's  Black Eye who won a rosette at Cork Show last year.

  5. You gave the onions to the PIGS????? Oh, I do love onions. I'd have been right there elbowing them out of the way. Google Tennessee Onion Casserole. Yummo!

    1. We grow onions all year round Debby. Thanks for the Tennessee onion casserole tip. We often make onion pizza. I discovered it at a Prog Rock festival in Germany. I also planted about 50 leeks for winter a few weeks ago. Leek and potato soup is wonderful.

  6. I’m allergic to the nettles. Just one little brush and my whole arm goes red
    We had a saddleback pig that we raised for the refrigerator
    Our friends has a bakery and we would get a huge back of cream buns, they hadn’t sold. And we fed them to him
    I think we gave him diabetes. He tasted really sweet!

    1. Gosh Angela. I rubbed some Anthisan on my nettle stings and they had virtually disappeared in a hour. That's why I give the pigs a mixed diet. You are adding flavour to the meat and they are not just eating ration.

  7. You fed those gorgeous onions to the pugs?!😱 I wonder if it makes the pigs taste interesting. Wild pigs shot on our Stewart Island are reknowned for their particular taste because they dine on seaweed. Do you ever feed seaweed to your pigs or put it on the garden.

    1. Yes TM. I have read about feeding seaweed to live stock. It's full of beneficial minerals like Iodine. I do collect seaweed from nearby beaches and I have also bought granulated seaweed fertilizer. Seaweed contains at least 50 trace elements and it's free of weeds. It's excellent for potatoes.

  8. OOOO that arm looks sore! You're a fearless gardener.
    I haven't got a hydrangea this year. The 2 I had sort of dried up and passed away. They're supposed to do well here but mine don't last long. I love their flowers.

  9. Hydrangeas like water Linda. They are very easy to propagate from cuttings. The pigs love to free range in the summer and the can walk back to their shed if the weather gets rough.
