I am always short of plant pots. I spent a rainy yesterday (all of it)in my poly-tunnel office,sieving my homemade compost, potting up and making new cuttings for my ever increasing perennials plant nursery. I have even started using Coca Cola cans.
All I did was cut the top off with a tin opener and discard that and punch a couple of holes in the bottom with a knife. Bobs your uncle!
Aluminum (American) or Alluminium (English) plant pots that will last for a very long time.
We bought some coffee cups the other day and this worked out at eight Cents a cup. They make good plant pots but they aren't cheap or free like the Coca Cola plant pots.
Makes you wonder how much we pay for our packaging? I think manufacturers should print the price of the tin or plastic packaging on our groceries. Do you think they should?

That's a great idea for recycling the cans for plant pots. I use anything I have around for pots. I often wonder if the cost of the container is more than the cost of the item. So much waste.
ReplyDeleteThanks granny j. I used a Pot Noodle container for a plant pot yesterday. We fill four large polythene bags with our recycled cans and plastic packaging a month. Then we burn diesel taking it to the waste recycling centre in town. Makes you wonder how much it all costs doesn't it? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGood thinking, Dave, and yes manufacturers should take the lead. I have in the dim and distant past used cans for all sorts of things rather than put them in the tip. Never did it for plants though.... damn!

My smallholding writer hero John Seymour use to say the dustbin man should never need to call to the smallholding. Everything was made of wood, metal or paper. Today most things come wrapped in plastic. Thanks!

Because, I have-heard-tell, that not all of what we bring to recycling centers, is recycled. Some is transported to poor countries, and lays around there. -sigh-

Plastic, plastic, everywhere. Just do a walk-around in your home, and really notice, all there, which is plastic. It's everywhere and in everything, nearly.
All we can do, is try, try, try to avoid bringing more plastic, into our homes. Which then, has to be gotten rid of, somehow.

ReplyDeleteSame here!!!! We live not far, from one of our cities big summer homes. (We live in a normal size home, of course) Anyway, this mansion has lots of lawn. So "the worker bees" are here everyday... Cutting, and blowing, and whatever.... All with very loud machines!!!!

Even the dead in the graveyards have to listen to lawnmowers and petrol strimmers. It must have been great to listen to just the sound of the scythe or the munch of grass by the sheep. I hate it when a car pulls up and leaves its engine running while the driver talks to you. Twenty First Century living I suppose?

I bought a few cuttings like this for 25p each many years ago when we lived in the last place and from those we ended up with quite a forest of trees. I like buying cuttings like this, rather than all the fancy stuff at garden centres. Do you get to sell yours?
ReplyDeleteThanks Rachel. I have sold three or four hundred of my plants to my gardening customers since April. The best thing is I get the plant pts back to make more plants. Its the only hobby I have ever had that makes me money instead of spending it. Oak trees once began life when they were Acorns. Thanks Rachel.
