I think the true April showers begin this weekend and we won't need to water our newly planted vegetables every day.
So I took the dry weather opportunity to hand weed the repurposed plastic oil drums and baths. I used a little hand fork to dig over the soil after I had weeded them:
Leeks happily growing in the deep soil and fym filled raised beds. The plant beds are ex heating oil tanks that I cut in half and drilled drainage holes in them. I don't think I will ever need to replace them unlike wooden raised beds.
Knee height or waist high gardening is the way to go for elderly gardeners and deep soil and fym filled beds give good drainage and depth for the vegetables roots systems.
Weeds appearing in the soil is a good indicator that it is warm enough to plant and sow and get good germination.
The last week's weather is like the darling buds of May when everything is in bloom.
I am really enjoying the great weather. I just hope we don't pay for it with a wet summer.
Are you busy weeding and sowing and planting in your veg plot or allotment?
Like I often write on here. Contai er gardening makes it possible to grow vegetables without the need of a veg plot or allotment. You grow them even in a concrete yard.
There is still plenty of time to plant your spudatoes..
I've filled an old metal BBQ with compost and soil. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to buy some young plants. Tomatoes for a start. I'll see what's available in the market. All I've planted so far is basil and lemon thyme
ReplyDeleteGood idea repurposing an old barbecue Linda. Lettuces grow very quick. I am trying to use our leeks up to make more growing space. We had chopped leeks with steak instead of using onions. They were very nice.
ReplyDeleteLast two days we woke up to snow. :(
ReplyDeleteOh no. Oh snow even. I hope Spring soon arrives for you Debby.
DeleteI use any tub or container, I have just ordered a couple more potato bags, I like them as I can pack them away during the winter months. I've not started leeks yet.
ReplyDeleteI might buy some leek plants because I have no polytunnel any more and I am waiting to get my homemade greenhouse frame. I bought potato bags from a carboot sale once Marlene. They are very good.
ReplyDeleteRemember the old gardeners' rhyme...
ReplyDeleteIf your spring is sunny and dry
In summer you will start to cry
When rain that keeps on pissing down
Ensures that all your seedlings drown.
Toilet Graffiti poem:
DeleteWhile you are reading what I have put.
You are peeing on your foot!
April showers bring May flowers. That's next week's weather and poem YP.
If you are a gardener called Dave
DeleteIt's time to dig an early grave
Jump right in and wave goodbye
And don't forget to wear a tie.
No dulcet tones of lawnmowers or strimmers please. I am sleeping.
DeleteThe best gravestone epitaph I have ever seen was in Kent: ""Goodnight. I will see you in the morning".
We now have peas, radishes and courgettes starting off in our mini growhouse outside. They are enjoying the sun and are sheltered from the biting wind by the polycarb walls. After P accidentally killed off all our tomato seedlings, I now have two shop bought plants basking in the sun on my kitchen windowsill.
ReplyDeleteMy tomato seedlings and leek seedlings died JayCee. I can't put tomatoes plants in the Conservatory because the dogs will eat them. I am hoping to have my greenhouse/ potting shed constructed and ready for May. I will buy some tomato plants from Lidl and grow them in and sit in it and drink beer and wine and read and write blogs and listed to Prog rock music in my glass man cave. It will be a Hoover free zone.
ReplyDeleteThe weather has been fantastic this week. I haven't spent much time in the garden, but I've noticed that the spinach is growing already.
ReplyDeleteI agree Jules. We don't get weather this good in July. Back to soft rain on Sunday.
