Time To Harvest The Japanese Winter Onions.

 We seem to grow more Alliums than any other vegetable.  All year round we have onions growing.

In Spring we plant Summer onion sets.  In September we plant Japanese Winter onions.

We also grow leeks.  These are very enjoyable especially in Winter when we make potato and leek soup.

Yesterday I harvested one of my Japanese onions 🌰:


Nice and fresh.

I have a lot of leeks and onions and I must think of some recipes especially to use up the leeks.

I have blogged on here before about making onion 🍕 pizza.  I wonder if I could make a leek pizza?

  1. Your onions are huge compared to mine, it's all your home produced manure and compost, I will leave mine for just a bit longer.

  2. Thanks Marlene. They like to be spaced out by at least 4 Inches or else they will be small. They are loving all the sunshine.

  4. Great leek suggestions Linda. Pies especially. It's hard to buy good pies over here. Unless you lik chicken and mushroom or chicken curry flavoured pies. We sometimes buy pork pies in Mark's and Spencer's and Tesco's in Cork or Killarney. J makes pork mince pies. One of the things I love when I visit Blighty is the regional food and drink. Cornish pasties and cider is something I am looking forward to sampling this summer. Thanks.

  5. I used to add finely chopped leeks to the pan of spuds being boiled for mash. They made a good leek & potato mash with some black pepper and a sprinkle of grated cheese.

  6. Sounds like Colcannon that we eat here in Ireland JayCee. You can use mashed potatoes and cabbage or mash potatoes and leeks or all together. It's excellent with sausages like Cumbeand gravy. You're making me hungry!😀

  7. I hate to say this Dave but you sir are a traitor to the land of your birth! We did not fight the Japs in WWII so that succeeding generations could grow and eat their bloody onions! Eat English onions instead! Even French onions would be better.

    1. They originate in Japan and are planted in Summer and overwinter unlike our Summer onions YP. Most vegetables we eat originate from over seas like the Mediterranean and Asia and South America for our spudatoes.

  8. I sometimes make leek (and/or onion) and potato soup; and I also use leek when I make quiche (with ham and leek).

  11. Once I entered my produce in a horticultural section of a agricultural show here in West Cork Jules. My beetroot was bigger than anybodies but I didn't win a prize though. I never bothered entrying my veg again. Thanks.

  12. Just planted shallots. Possibly too early but they were sprouting already. Sounds like your readers have leeks covered. We eat em with corn in a cheesy sauce rolled in crepes and baked in the oven with more cheese on top - like those fat filled pasta tubes.
