The water table is very full at the moment and raised beds definitely improve the drainage. I am in my early sixties and gardening at knee and waist height makes life easier for me.
I chopped and sweated the leeks and potatoes in a pan with some butter on top of the gas stove. I blackened the pan in the process. 😄
I poured in some water and broke up a stock cube and waited to bring it to the boil.
The soup. I could of liquidised it but I don't mind lumpy veg soup. I really must get into learning how to prepare and cook food. It's not easy when your wife did everything for you for the last thirty years. I just grew the vegetables and tended the plot.

The leeks are our home grown, organic vegetables and the potatoes and soda bread came from Lidl.
I think if I had added some meat like minced beef. It would make a good stew or broth. It was a good warm and hearty mel on a cold winter's day.

DeleteI used to make a lot of soups but then went right off them. Some people use a soup maker which I believe is a chuck-it-in-and-leave-it machine but I've never owned one.
ReplyDeleteCooking is 'just' following a recipe and as long as the ingredients are good then the final outcome is sure to be OK! Good Luck
Chuck-it-and-leave-it. That's a great way of describing slow cooking. Homemade soup is full of vitamins and gets you warm.

ReplyDeleteWe use my veg for soups when I have them, hubby makes a good bottom of the fridge soup, using every veg which is going soft, add pepper and salt, perfect. We often keep gravy/sauce from dishes to add to our veg soups, which gives instance lift.
ReplyDeleteGood soup ideas Marlene. It reminds of my old camping trips when we would throw what we had in cans into a pan. It was good stodge after a long hike. We often give the pigs any old jars of food or bread , cakes, fruit and biscuits and the contents of any food jars like jam.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had leeks in the garden. I can't find small plants anywhere. I love them in all stews and soups. Chuck it and leave it is the best way to make soup. You don't need to sweat anything, and that includes yourself!

DeleteI'll buy a packet tomorrow. Our garden shop no longer has vege plants but does have seeds.
I would give you some leeks if you lived near me Linda. They don't mind being dug out and moved to another bed. One of my favourite winter vegetables.
DeleteThanks for the soup advice Linda. Leeks are usually sown in spring here. Garden centres sell leek plants. I bought leek plants tis year and used my dibber to frop them in the holes and watered them in rather than planting them allowing room for them to get girth and a white root sock. ReplyDeleteSounds like the way I would make soup not that I ever do but I like leeks. I am more likely to open a tin of Heinz. But leeks are great and I like young thin ones best when I have meat and two veg type meals. Chelsea looked the better side yesterday against Arsenal. I was watching Chelsea to see Esteveo, the new young winger. Thanks Dave.
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel. We always grow the Allium family like onions and leeks. Heinz Ravioli is a favourite when we are in Tesco's in Killarney. Chelsea look like a top European team. I think the Premiership will go to the wire.
