From Plot To Pot. Leek And Potato 🥔 Soup.

My leeks just lifted from the repurposed plastic oil tanks raised beds.

The water table is very full at the moment and raised beds definitely improve the drainage.  I am in my early sixties and gardening at knee and waist height makes life easier for me.

I chopped and sweated the leeks and potatoes in a pan with some butter on top of the gas stove.  I blackened the pan in the process. 😄
I poured in some water and broke up a stock cube and waited to bring it to the boil.

The soup.  I could of liquidised it but I don't  mind lumpy veg soup.  I really must get into learning how to prepare and cook food.  It's not easy when your wife did everything for you for the last thirty years.  I just grew the vegetables and tended the plot.

The leeks are our home grown, organic vegetables and the potatoes and soda bread came from Lidl.

I think if I had added some meat like minced beef.  It would make a good stew or broth.  It was a good warm and hearty mel on a cold winter's day.

Any one else growing veg and making their own soup?

    1. So true.😀 We replaced the electric cooker with gas so we can cook even when we get a power cut during gale season.

  2. I used to make a lot of soups but then went right off them. Some people use a soup maker which I believe is a chuck-it-in-and-leave-it machine but I've never owned one.
Cooking is 'just' following a recipe and as long as the ingredients are good then the final outcome is sure to be OK! Good Luck

  3. Chuck-it-and-leave-it. That's a great way of describing slow cooking. Homemade soup is full of vitamins and gets you warm.

  4. You have to learn that browning the bottom is called caramelisation....like making toffee only different!

  5. Caramelisation🤔. Thanks for the tip.

  6. We use my veg for soups when I have them, hubby makes a good bottom of the fridge soup, using every veg which is going soft, add pepper and salt, perfect. We often keep gravy/sauce from dishes to add to our veg soups, which gives instance lift.

  7. Good soup ideas Marlene. It reminds of my old camping trips when we would throw what we had in cans into a pan. It was good stodge after a long hike. We often give the pigs any old jars of food or bread , cakes, fruit and biscuits and the contents of any food jars like jam.

  8. I wish I had leeks in the garden. I can't find small plants anywhere. I love them in all stews and soups. Chuck it and leave it is the best way to make soup. You don't need to sweat anything, and that includes yourself!
    You're doing well.
Maybe I can grow leeks from seed. I don't know.

    1. Thanks. They're a winter vege here in Greece. Usually I can buy small plants but can't find any.
I'll buy a packet tomorrow. Our garden shop no longer has vege plants but does have seeds.

    2. I would give you some leeks if you lived near me Linda. They don't mind being dug out and moved to another bed. One of my favourite winter vegetables.

  9. Thanks for the soup advice Linda. Leeks are usually sown in spring here. Garden centres sell leek plants. I bought leek plants tis year and used my dibber to frop them in the holes and watered them in rather than planting them allowing room for them to get girth and a white root sock. One of my favourite winter vegetables. Thanks for the encouragement Linda.

    1. Yes Cali. It's difficult to buy freshness in the shops. You can beat homegrown vegetables free from artificial fertilizers and insecticide and pesticides. Thanks for commenting.

  11. You can't beat soup made from home grown vegetables. Sometimes I find it easier to use the slow cooker.

  12. Yes home grown homemade soup is excellent Jules. I think we have a slow cooker somewhere?🤔

  13. Sounds like the way I would make soup not that I ever do but I like leeks. I am more likely to open a tin of Heinz. But leeks are great and I like young thin ones best when I have meat and two veg type meals. Chelsea looked the better side yesterday against Arsenal. I was watching Chelsea to see Esteveo, the new young winger. Thanks Dave.

  14. Hi Rachel. We always grow the Allium family like onions and leeks. Heinz Ravioli is a favourite when we are in Tesco's in Killarney. Chelsea look like a top European team. I think the Premiership will go to the wire.

  15. Yes, after seeing Chelsea again yesterday I think they are going to be a difficult team for Arsenal to hold off.

  16. I think the Champions League and International matches is tiring out the top teams.

  17. A good winter soup - lots of crusty bread. Chicken goes quite well in that soup too.
