Ghosting It.

Thanks for the comments and all the views for my Kansas post.  Did you see Henrikh Mkhitaryan (we call him Mickey) play for United the other night?  He reminded me of a cross between Ronaldo and Cantona.  That lad is going places.  He was sensational I loved the way he ghosted past the opposition.

Talking of ghosts.  I am currently reading a superb novella called A Christmas Carol.  It's the chosen December reading on a blog I follow: Be Sol Be.  Yes it's the one we all know that we see on the television every  year a long with the Wizard of OZ.

I have seen the Scrooge films many times but never read the book. Charles Dickens seems to have been almost obsessed with ghosts.  Victorian society loved ghost stories and many attended seances or went to spiritualist meetings.

Do you believe in ghosts?  I saw one a few years a go.  I just noticed something out of the corner of my eye.  Then I looked again.  There looking in our kitchen window was an old lady wearing a long hooded cloak and she had a very pointed nose.  The image was grey and transparent.  I shouted to my wife and the ghost sped past  the other window.  My wife just saw the back of her.  It was very strange.

Have you any ghost stories?

  1. I saw Micki play. He never stops and he can score goals. More of an all rounder than Ronaldo! I like a Christmas Carol and I should re-read it. A story with a moral to it for everyone. The farmhouse I grew up in had a ghost or ghosts. Lots of spirits moving around. My current farmhouse has strange happenings too. There is a door upstairs that is difficult to open to a room we never use. I sometimes look down the landing to it and find it is open. Very weird but I havent heard or seen it. My blog is up and running again.

  2. Hi Rachel. Yes I think I saw a bright future for United on Thursday. Micki reminds me of a lot of great United players. Kanchelsis was a great all rounder too.

Charles Dickens was a great social reformer through his writing. I believe the book is always in print. He made very little from a Christmas Carol. But he made Christmas special for so many ordinary people.

I don't know if spirits are ghosts or just residual energy/ negatives of past lives. I know what you mean about doors being left open, strange smells like tobacco and thing disappearing and turning up again. Great to see your blog is up and running again Rachel.

  3. I've only read 6 pages of Scrooge so far but it looks much easier reading. Never seen a ghost but had a few strange coincidences. Have a friend who's husband seemed to hang around for a long time afterwards. The smell of the stinky cheese he loved would sometimes waft through the house and he would tuck her in at night. Creepy

  4. Hi LA. I am enjoying the book very much. Dickens writes with a lot of humour and pathos.

That does sound creepy. We have experienced pipe tobacco aroma and the sound of hob nailed boots outside the farm house. Apparently my grandmother us to say to my mother it was my great grandfather checking the cattle late at night. My mother use to say it's only your ancestors come backing to see if you're Ok. Thanks.

  5. About 12 years ago I wrote an adapted version of Scrooge as a play for a junior school class so that everybody got a speaking part (about 30). Even the shyest child managed at least one line of text and they all enjoyed it. I was surprised recently, because I'd forgotten all about it, to discover that they still perform it every Christmas.

    2. Hi Gwil. Sounds like plays are your forte. It must be wonderful to see your adapted play live. Scrooge is a wonderful story and still relevant today. Dickens was a very clever writer who good leave us with a message yet entertaining us at the same time. Social reform through words.

    3. I forgot to say. You once saw a ghost in Wales didn't you Gwil? I think a lot of people don't believe in ghosts until they actually see one.

    1. Hi Casey. I know what you mean about being scared. It certainly changes your outlook on the after life when you see a ghost. Thanks!
