Potato And Bacon Cakes With Baked Beans.

I said we would make some more traditional Irish food on my next post.  Here you are.  Potato cakes filled with bacon.  I got this recipe from our Darina Allen Irish cook book.  You make the potatoes in the traditional way (see video below ) and add cooked small pieces of bacon to the mash.

They are great for a breakfast or any time of the day.  Don't make more than 2 per person though, they are very filling.  Serve them with Baked Beans.  Heinz are my favourite.  I think they are really American foods.  The potato comes from the Andes in South America and Baked Beans originated in North America.  They were originally called Navy Beans and they are actually made from Haricot beans which are white in colour.  They are also stewed beans not baked.

Regular readers will have seen this Beaked Beans On Toast menu before.  I took it when we visited Faro in The Algarve in April 2015.

Here's a gem of a Keith Floyd video I remember watching.  I found it on You Tube yesterday.  Mr Floyd was one of my culinary heroes.  Such a character and he loved the Stranglers.  One of my favourite bands too.

Enjoy the video and the meal.

  1. Beaked beans....not my favourite. So English and yet so American! The Irish potato cakes on the other hand are something I wouldn't mind trying.

    1. Hi L A. No not my favourite: beaked beans either. Give me a tin of Heinz any day. Have a go at making them and please let me know what you think of them. Don't eat too many though. They are very very filling. They keep you going all day. Thanks!

  2. Just watched the entertaining video. Floyd was a favourite of mine. He enjoyed his cooking and was a delight to watch. The museum is wonderful, the potato cakes easy and must be scrumptious with fresh Irish butter!

    1. Yes Floyd was a real character and his own man. I would have liked to have met him. He lived in Kinsale here in West Cork in the nineties. Who is your favourite chef?

    2. Anthony Bourdain is good watching, Julia child I would have liked to have seen, have watched a couple of her videos on YouTube and read her biography. Gordon Ramsey never. He's in it only for the money. Jamie Oliver's not bad. One of the best I've seen is a Greek cook, not chef, Ilias Marmalakis, as broad as he is short and loves every minute of his job. Keith Floyd has got to be up there at the front.t here's an Asian chef too whose name I cannot remember, ken someone?

    3. Yes LA Anthony Bourdain is great. I watched him when he went to Cuba. Would love to visit there and see all the 1950's American cars. Gordon Ramsey is a character but I wouldn't like to work in his kitchen. Never heard of Marmalakis. Jamie Oliver is a humble guy with great wit. Watched him ther other night in Mexico. A young man asked him to cook at his childs Christening and Jamie of course said yes. Nice guy! Keith Floyd is in my top three. I like most of them. Especially Darina Allen, HFW, The Hairy Biker's, James Martin.. Is Ken Hom your chef?

  3. I had a lot of potato cakes in Russia. They were served with meat and fish or even as a meal on their own sometimes. I loved Keith Floyd.

    1. Hi Rachel. Sounds like Russian food is very similar to food we have traditionally made and ate in Britain and Ireland.. Keith Floyd was brilliant. See Chelsea are top of the table tonight? United have a lot of catching up to do. Not impossible though. Thanks!

    2. I have a recipe for a potato cake with a filling of sour kraut and onions with caraway seeds some where. you have it with a red fruit sauce. I cant remember the name of the sauce... there is also a white sauce with cloud berries added to it. Heck I wish I could remember the names of these sauces. You have it with pike or carp....! Urgh. I will have to ask my sister she will know.

    3. Hi Sol. Sounds different. The Polish eat carp at Christmas, especially.

  4. I've never really watched any floyd stuff as it's a bit before my time, but I found his style really watchable. We're big Jamie Oliver fans in this house. My girls even ask to watch him after tea sometimes!

    1. I think it's time the BBC repeated all Keith Floyd's cooking programmes Kev. I have watched Jamie through his different hair styles and programmes. Loved the series with his cooking truck. It's great that your kids like watching cooking programmes with you. Thanks!
