I have posted blogs before about seeing ghosts, hearing strange noises and smelling aromas like pipe tobacco.
Afew summers ago, three of us were looking around County Limerick. We stopped at a small village famous for an old ruined Franciscan Friary.

There was also the ruins of a building which had once been a notorious Hellfire club. A place where people would get drunk, hold seances and bring the devil up from Hell. There's even talk about a maid being burned alive there.
This trip was three or for years ago. We decided to walk around the Friary. It was a lovely still day and we walked amongst the ruins. I felt very paranoid like someone was watching us. My son and wife said they felt the same.
Some how I left them downstairs looking round a room and I continued up some stone stairs. Something poked me like a finger in the area of my back where I injured it twenty years or so ago and then an orb flew past me an out the window.
I found the other two and my wife said:
"I don't like it in here".
I told them about my ghostly encounter and we agreed it was time to leave. This was in broad day light.

Have you had supernatural experiences when visiting ancient buildings?
I do not believe in ghosts or any of the connected stuff. I would happily camp in a graveyard and enjoy a sound night's sleep there. In my view of things, it is just us on this tiny jewel in the vastness of space. There's nothing else - just us.

ReplyDeleteWe once visited Culloden and I asked a tourist guide if there had been any ghostly experiences. He said that a young man came up to him looking petrified and said he heard the skirl of bagpipes and saw a Scottish Chieftan armed with a sword. Thanks.
Dave, Culloden is eery I have been a few times, some before the visitors centre and twice after. Avebury and Stonehenge have an energy. although I cried in the new visitors centre at stonehenge when I got to the skeleton of a boy. With todays tech they could have digitally printed the skeleton and put that up on display and but the body back where it was found. It moved me so much that I have decided I will be cremated and thrown into the sea. I want no one to dig me up and put me on display. that is someones child, who was more than likely sacrificed. Surely they deserve some dignity.

DeleteWe often say "leave them alone" when we watch archeological programmes on television. I think it's good to have a grave to visit but I totally understand where you're coming from Sol.
Not specific buildings, but I couldn't get out of Tintagel fast enough. I felt spooked the entire time I was there. I also feel 'something' in stone circles, but they give off a feeling I quite like.

ReplyDeleteVeg Artist and Dave, most stone circles are on natural lay lines. You can dowse the energy with rods. I am lucky enough to have done this with 'Arthur Pendragon' sure enough, when I passed through the line of the stones, the rods crossed. There is real power there. The stones are warm to touch. Did you find that at Drombeg Circle? I could talk about this for hours, it is fascinating to me. People were more connected to the earth. Not with all this tech blocking them. power lines, etc. there is a stone circle I hope to visit on the 21st December if we arent in lockdown.

DeleteWhen I was a child my cousins tried to dowse for water, but I was the only one who could do it. I remember them all backing away slightly! I do seem to be able to do some odd things sometimes, although I'm not remotely interested in witchy powers!
DeleteI can dowse with hazel, willow and wire the veg artist. You know willow is mad for water and will root if you plant it in the ground. In Australia map dowsers are sent maps or pencil drawings of land where the owner wants a well or a spring and they dowse the map and mark where to sink the well. It's amazing. I don't think of it being witchy but a natural gift.

My gran called them 'visitations' its your ancestors checking you are ok. As old as my house is and all the people who must have lived here, it feels warm and inviting. I walk in some places in town and think to myself, Robert Burns was here. I go to my FIL's house and look out across the loch and say to myself William Wallace was there and so was Robert the Bruce. And over a few jars, we all came to the conclusion that earth energy, stone circles and chalk drawings i.e. chalk horses are all near water and earth energy and they said probably bronze age. How did they know this so long ago? We think we are so clever now with all the tech we have, but they tried to harness the elements, knew where power was. Maybe they were where it was at. if you think about geothermal energy being made in Iceland, what if earth energy is the UK version and we just dont know how to harness it yet.
DeleteYes Sol. Water plays so much in religions like Christianity with The Flood and Baptism. A lot of churches are built on holy wells and healing springs. I have read about geothermal energy too. There are so many rural things like water dowsing and the things you mentionthat modern man has discarded or dismissed and could be used today. ReplyDeleteI visited Gunston Hall once, years ago. It is a hobby of ours to visit historical buildings, and the Washington DC area is awash with them. (Bear in mind that our country is younger than yours). I walked through Gunston Hall with the tour group and felt nothing out of the ordinary at all, just the usual wonder at the people come and gone before me, the old things, etc. I stepped out the back door and into the landscaped garden, and there was a scent, I don't even know what it was. I believe it was the hedges, but I could not tell you for sure. That scent was so strong, and I cannot describe the feeling. It was different from deja vu. I belonged. I stumbled and stopped dead in my tracks and the feeling did not leave me. I've gone to many historical places since, and I've never felt that way again. I'm not sure that it can be described as a ghost story, but it certainly involved an old house and a strange feeling. YP? I love cemeteries. They are peaceful and they tell stories. They are a lovely place to walk.
