We went shopping in Aldi on Saturday looking for a tin of corned beef to make corned beef toasties for our tea. We couldn't find it anywhere in the tins section.🤔
J asked a member of staff where was the tins of corned beef? She said that it was only available when it was on special offer.
What is the world coming to?
You can no longer buy English 🍺. Yet the shelves are full of beers from all over Europe and you can't get a delicacy like a tin of corned beef?
Should I blame the disaster they called Brexit? Five years this week! Even Nigel Farage says it was a failure!
We eventually found a packet of smoked 🥓 bacon and I bought a few cans of Guinness.
We didn't attempt to operate the "self service" tills after our last shopping adventure/nightmare if you recall?
It's quicker to queue up and get served by a 'real' person than having to get another 'real' person to assist you serve yourself.
"Welcome To The Machine" (Pink Floyd) began to play in my mental jukebox at the thought of the shopping nightmare.
Back at home. We decided to make toasties and had to force the bread into the toaster bag.
Why do they make them so small? Are we living in Liliput? Gullibles Shopping Travels perhaps? Perhaps they are made in China?
Any way: Our toasted sandwiches 🥪 were very nice.
Perhaps eat half before putting it in the toastie bag?
ReplyDeleteJust a suggestion 😜
True. It's annoying when a regular sliced piece of bread will not fit in a toastie bag. More annoying when you can't buy a tin of corned beef or some English beer. Is it pay back Brexit?
ReplyDeleteI hate those self-service tills too but late at night in our local Tesco Superstore you are forced to go self-service as the regular till are all unmanned... or unwomanned.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree YP. To use an Irish slang word: "They're a bollix." How much must these self service machines have cost?
ReplyDeleteI wont use the self service tills because I used to work in retail and the tills are putting people out of work. As for toasties I make them regularly for my husband when he gets in from work on a late shift and because the bread is too big for the bags I always cut them in half before I but them into the bags. Jane a regular reader.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane. I am all for taking the alienation and another out of work. But I don't want to see people end up with no jobs. Half a toasted 🥪 sandwich males perfect sense. Thanks for the comment and for being a regular reader Jane.
ReplyDeleteExcuse my ignorance but what is a toastie bag? It looks like plastic.
ReplyDeleteYes Tigger's Mum. Plastic sandwich bags were invented in the nineteen fifties. You can also get roasting bags for roasting joints. They are supposed to seal in the flavour without any oozing mess in your oven or toaster. I can't fathom how you can put a plastic bag in a electrical appliance and it doesn't melt. The food tastes good though.🤔
ReplyDeleteHmm...I don't cook food in plastic...
ReplyDeleteHi GZ. Apparently they are made of fibreglass.
DeleteI don't understand - I thought a toasty was similar to our grilled cheese sandwiches here across the pond. We make those by spreading a cheese sandwich with either butter or mayonnaise and cooking it on a hot griddle, or skillet until brown and crusty on each side and the cheese is melted. How is a plastic bag involved?
ReplyDeleteThe sandwich is placed in a bag and put in the toaster Ana.
DeleteYou will have to explain toastie bags to me. Here, we slap them into a pan with a bit of butter and then toast them on both sides, which makes the cheese (and whatever is in the middle) warm too.
ReplyDeleteSee my reply to Ana Debby.
DeleteOh dear, and now I've seen that I'm late to the party and that Tigger's Mum has already asked, and you have already answered. My apologies.
ReplyDeleteNo problem Debby. I find it amazing that you can place plastic in an electric toaster or a roasting bag in a oven.
ReplyDeleteI find it amazing that people aren't put off by the idea of grilling their food in a plastic bag! Someone handed me a plastic spatula the other day to turn some pancakes and I could see where it had previously been melted and bits were falling off into the food (eek). I quickly swapped it for something metal. (We cook our toasties on a tray under the grill - and fight over the bits that ooze out and get extra golden and slightly crispy.)
ReplyDeleteToastie bags are claimed to be safe and prevent cross contamination TM. We use them because they are quick and clean. We also use plastic roasting bags and often cook with the air fryer. All modern and easy ways of cooking food.
ReplyDeleteReading online. I have just found out you can make toasted sandwiches in an airfyer.🤔
