Now my polytunnel is in a ground/plastic under repair position. I have decided to start my seed propagation indoors.
This was no mean feat and it took us the best part of an hour to move the flotsam and jetsam and detritus of every day domestic life like black bin bags full of clothes.
Spare boxrooms are like sheds. The more you have the more you will fill them.
Any road any way:
🌰 Onions ("Snowball") sets pressed into plastic planting modules half filled with potting compost. This method works far better than pushing the poor onion sets in the cold and very wet soil. We'll have a look at their progress in a few weeks. We also sowed 🍅 tomatoes, leeks, lettuce and cabbages.
Then we sprayed them with a mist and cut along the seam of a polythene bag and covered up the trays. Hopefully the dogs and cats will leave them alone?
Anyone else making their spare bedroom into a chitting room/potting shed? It's got to be better than rebuilding your motorbike in the front room or kitchen?
I feel my pre spring growing itchiness stress wearing off after our indoor sowing adventures.
This will be the third incredibly wet winter on the trot.
I am not going to show P this post - it will give him ideas and my sewing room would soon be full of dirty old plant pots!!
ReplyDeleteFrom a sewing room to a sowing room JayCee. It's time for man caves to appear in domestic abodes.
ReplyDeleteI am banned from using our spare bedroom, but I do have my sunny greenhouse, still not foing seeds yet. I do use my kitchen window sill.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how warm and comfortable I was planting onion sets and sowing vegetable seeds Marlene. It's much better than a cold greenhouse or polytunnel or veg plot at this time of year. I even listened tome heavy rock music on Spotify on my mobile phone.
ReplyDeleteMy greenhouse ir raised in a sunny spot, it was lovely and warm inside today
DeleteGreat stuff Marlene. Is it south facing? I am thinking of making one out of old doors and windows and corrugated plastic sheeting for the roof and block walls. It's sadly getting too rough here for polytunnel plastic.
DeleteYour greenhouse idea sounds great Dave. That should stand up to all our Winter storms.
DeleteHopefully JayCee. It won't be very big unlike my old polytunnel. But I can grow outside where that was. Anyone got any old UPVC doors or windows they don't want?😊
DeleteSome of my seed trays are on the kitchen countertops and my lemon trees are still in the dining room. I'm not sure I'll have room for anything else, just yet :)
ReplyDeleteHave you got an allotment Jules? About thirty years ago we lived upstairs in a council owned flat and I grew potatoes 🥔 in a large plant pot in the upstairs window. We also rented an allotment and I would ride my bike down the road with Netto plastic carrier bags full of our homegrown vegetables. I often nearly fell off I was that overloaded like a French Johnny onion seller.😃
ReplyDeleteI haven't, Dave. I could make a little more growing space in the garden, if I really wanted to, but I don't have the time or inclination at the moment.
DeleteI love my veg plot Jules. I miss my allotments in England. Great camaraderie.
DeleteThe clue is in the term - "bedroom" - not "potting shed". When guests come to stay over they will probably not wish to be surrounded by sprouting onions and mucky seed trays.
ReplyDeleteI am raising seeds on the widow sills in a part built conservarory.
ReplyDeleteSo far ,the torpedo shallots have germinated well.Peas have germinated, a good germination rate on tomato, all types. Sweet peppers starting to pop up. So far, much better germination than last year. I am going to use a small strip grow light ,to stop them getting leggy. The new year has started.
Pity you are not closer I have spare windows and doors.
You could also incorporate the ibc , full of water, as one wall and help with warmth.
Kathy
Exactly YP. We live in a tourist area with lots of hotels and accommodation available. They could always bring a tent.
ReplyDeleteYou are very kind Kathy. Already I have three upvc windows and I will use plastic corrugated sheets for the roof. You have been very busy. It's great to see seeds germinating.
ReplyDeleteWell, Mister, I caved. Today I caved and I blame you. I planted some pepper seeds and have them in my window sill. I know it's stupid, but I just had to do SOMETHING. It's supposed to get above freezing here in a couple days.
ReplyDeleteIt's not stupid at all Debby. Peppers need a long tinexto germinate and grow into strong plants. There is a lot to be said for indoor gardening at this time of year. Especially heat.
