I sowed Globe Artichoke seeds last year and I got florets in the first year.
They are perennials and now more artichokes have appeared:
A posh Thistle?Have you ever ate them?
Some gardeners plant them in their borders for the blue flowers.
I also planted Jerusalem Artichokes tubers last year and I never harvested them last year. They grew back again this spring.
Jerusalem Artichokes.
They have no connection to Jerusalem they are a member of the sunflower family.
The tubers can be roasted like potatoes 🥔 in late Autumn.
Do you grow them and have you ever ate them?
My father grew Jerusalem artichokes once, and spent the next 10 years pulling up the bits left In the ground. Didn't much care for the taste (or side effects), and with every tiny little bit of root seemingly determined to grow we got heartily sick of them. Globe artichokes, they're a much better bet - decorative and tasty, but fiddly to eat (and feature in Delia Smith's cookery course booked in the vegetable section).
ReplyDeleteI believe Jerusalem Artichokes have earned the name: "Farty chokes" Will. There's some good YouTube videos on how to prepare and cook Globe Artichokes.
Deleteyes to both (grown and eaten). Unimpressed by eating globe artichokes but I do like the plants. Jerusalem artichokes I like as soup (bake rhem in the oven then squeeze the pulp out of the skins) but it pays to be awsre of the eindy effect they produce. 🤣
ReplyDeleteHi TM. I like Globe Artichokes flowers. Incredible that they are a member of the Thistle family. I quite like the Jerusalem Artichokes tubers in winter.
