I sowed Globe Artichoke seeds last year and I got florets in the first year.
They are perennials and now more artichokes have appeared:
A posh Thistle?Have you ever ate them?
Some gardeners plant them in their borders for the blue flowers.
I also planted Jerusalem Artichokes tubers last year and I never harvested them last year. They grew back again this spring.
Jerusalem Artichokes.
They have no connection to Jerusalem they are a member of the sunflower family.
The tubers can be roasted like potatoes 🥔 in late Autumn.
Do you grow them and have you ever ate them?
My father grew Jerusalem artichokes once, and spent the next 10 years pulling up the bits left In the ground. Didn't much care for the taste (or side effects), and with every tiny little bit of root seemingly determined to grow we got heartily sick of them. Globe artichokes, they're a much better bet - decorative and tasty, but fiddly to eat (and feature in Delia Smith's cookery course booked in the vegetable section).
ReplyDeleteI believe Jerusalem Artichokes have earned the name: "Farty chokes" Will. There's some good YouTube videos on how to prepare and cook Globe Artichokes.
Deleteyes to both (grown and eaten). Unimpressed by eating globe artichokes but I do like the plants. Jerusalem artichokes I like as soup (bake rhem in the oven then squeeze the pulp out of the skins) but it pays to be awsre of the eindy effect they produce. 🤣
ReplyDeleteHi TM. I like Globe Artichokes flowers. Incredible that they are a member of the Thistle family. I quite like the Jerusalem Artichokes tubers in winter.
ReplyDeleteWe have never grown them, nor eaten them. At least, not knowingly.
ReplyDeleteWill you be posting photos of their flowers?
I have 8 globe artichokes ready to harvest JayCee. I will leave some of them to flower. I like their architectural shapes.
DeleteI have eaten both types of artichoke. I must admit that I rather like Jerusalem artichokes with their nutty/smoky flavour but you don't see them for sale very often.
ReplyDeleteSainsbury's was always the best place to find any vegetable YP. I like Jerusalem Artichokes. They also make a good screen.
DeleteI’ve grown artichokes. But I’m not a fan of eating them.
ReplyDeleteI’ve never grown or tasted Jerusalem artichokes.
Maybe I should try and source them and give them a go.
If you leave some in the ground Angela. They come back every year. They are definitely different and worth growing.
ReplyDeleteI've never grown artichokes but I've cleaned them spikes and all many times, and cooked them.
ReplyDeleteThey're easy to grow here. A house up the road has waste land where they appear every year.
Hi Linda. I have seen videos of how to prepare and cook them. Sounds like another recipe for your Poros cook book.
DeleteNo, I've never tried them (I must have lived a sheltered existence). What do they taste like?
ReplyDeleteHi Jules. I only grew them because they looked good and something different. People say they have a earthy nutty taste.
