The Heath Robinson Type Cold Frame Back In Use Again In The Veg Plot.

Yes folks it that time of the year again.  Regular readers will have seen my 'cold frame' before.    I moved it brick by by brick again this morning.  It's two rows of bricks with a shower curtain placed on top of it.  The stick propping up the frame cost nothing and neither did any of the materials.  Even the plant pots are ones rescued from a recycling centre and they won't be going in landfill just yet.

There are approximately 150 of my plant cuttings in the frame.  I even made another frame with some pieces of 3x2 wood I had lying round and I placed another shower curtain on top of that.  That's two cold frames for Nowt or nuffink!  Do my plants wish they lived in a nice garden centre bought cold frame?  Nah.  They're like me.  They have had to rough it all their lives.

Do you have any gardening tips that cost nothing?

  1. Would the Tate Modern pay me good money for it Rachel? All I want is a little house in the Algarve with a garden for the winter. Thanks!

  2. Experimental art perhaps? Two for the price of one? "This time next year we'll be millionaires".

Just got to get the fencing in and then I can start to plant. Need a little plan so I know what is what.

    1. Hi Sol. I saw some Laurel plants on Done Deal for 2 Euros a plant. Both the German garden centres are a good source for your garden supplies. I bought two pairs of secateurs this week. Think they cost 2 Euros fifty a pair. Do you go to carboot sales? Always a good place for cheap plants, gardening books and tools. Plant nurseries are also worth visiting and they often have bargains and lots of free advice. The Camelia sounds a great buy. Thanks!

    1. Thanks Susan. I once posted a blog entitled: Allotment Artitecture. I have seen allotments use all kinds of things for their gardening; supermarket trolleys to dry their onions, sheds made from pallets, homemade polytunnels made with plastic water pipes and polythene, lumps of concrete to hold metal sheets down on a shed..? Its good to utilise things for gardening projects that don't cost anything. Thanks for your comment.

  5. I have no tips, just wishing I had a gardener. When part of garden had the upheaval I was/am left with a dead fern. Have you ever tried removing a dead fern? It looks a mess and my back prevents me from bending!

  6. Hi Valerie. There are alway jobbing gardeners like myself who would dig out the fern for you with a spade and axe if necessary. You could always put a postcard in a shop window or an advert in the local newspaper wanting a jobbing gardener? The hardest shrub I ever dug out with an axe and shovel was an holly bush. Their roots are like iron. Thanks !

    1. The regular guy only mows lawns. I have an occasional gardener but (you're not going to believe this) I didn't think of asking him to remove it!

  9. Found a white hydrangea in the mothers day section at the supermarket. it came home with me. I am going to go back on monday, post mothers day and see what bargains are there. I have seen in the garden what I think is a climbing hydrangea. I will be taking cuttings from that also. I hope it is white. If not I will sell them at the garage sale in July if they take
