I Never Got To See Jimi Hendrix But I Did See Uli Jon Roth At A New Day Festival.

I finally got to see one of Rock musics greatest guitarists last Sunday.  I featured Uli Jon Roth a couple of blogs posts back.  He was a guitarist in the legendary Scorpions in the nineteen seventies.

So I got down near the front of the stage to take a photo of the great man.  He speaks very softly and is an amazingly humble person.  Himself and his band played a lot of classic hits and even played All Along The Watch Tower by Jimi Hendrix.  I have seen videos and heard records of this classic.  I think it must have been very close to the original and Jimi would have been proud.

Did you ever see Jimi Hendrix play live?  What was he like?  I've seen some great bands like Rush, Kansas, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Blue Oyster Cult, to name a few.  But Ulri Roth must be up there with some of the worlds greatest musicians.

Here's a video of the song by Uli Jon Roth.

To digress.  I had to show you this flower pot.  Isn't amazing?  It's not like the plastic ones that I have in my garden.  It's a stone carved flower pot masterpiece.

  1. Great atmosphere Dave, I feel like I was at the concert. I was talking to my brother at the weekend about Jimi Hendrix. He saw him in a small town in mid Norfolk in the late 1960s. The town is Dereham and is a little known place but had a venue and an organiser who arranged many greats in the early part of their careers. My brother has been following rock bands for the past 50 years.

    3. I thought so. Soft Machine are very good. Very Jazz like. I prefer prog bands that have singers. But that's only my opinion. Thanks Rachel.

    1. Hi Gwil. I once saw Jimmy Page from Led zeppelin play at The Monster's Of Rock at Castle Donington. Seen Roger Waters in Warsaw too. You can't beat live music can you?

    2. Just thinking about what you say about live music - a small cross section of the many musicians and singers I've been privileged to see perform live: Hot Chocolate, New Christy Minstrels, New Seekers, Alvin Stardust, The Searchers, Freddie and the Dreamers, Rhythm and Blues Incorporated, Roy Castle, Bryn Terfel, The Four Tops, Ken Dodd, Joe Zawinul, Esso Steel Band, Mr X (or was it Josef Locke?), Gerry and the Pacemakers, Placido Domingo, Debby Harry and Blondie, and of course the remarkable Hubert von Goisern . . . the list would go on for ever if I could only remember them all.

    3. Debbie Harry and Blondie? I have gig envy. I play their music from forty years ago and it still knocks spots off anything today. You seem to have a very eclectic music taste Gwil. I go from brass bands to heavy rock. Good job I am not a DJ. Thanks!

    4. I saw Bill Hayley in Warrington and when I came out I'd got a ticket for not fixing one of those little red and white lights on a wire you had to stick into the cigarette lighter and clip onto your offside window when parking in a built up area in the dark. Did I care!?!

    5. I bet you sang: See you later alligator. I think Homeward Bound by Simon and Garfunkel was composed at Widnes train station. Not very far from Widnes. George Formby's final resting place is in Warrington. What do I store in my head!

  3. My favourite JH recording is The Star Spangrled Banner (I was going to change the typo - but no it fits) Spangrled is good!

  5. First, that is a masterpiece flower pot.
All my concerts were folk, like the Clancy Brothers, Dylan, Baez, Pete Seeger. Guess I'm a bit older than you. Dylan is still around to be seen, and I have.

  6. Hi Joanne. The flower pot is a masterpiece. It must be worth a kings ransom.

Kansas are the top of my favourite rock gigs.

My dad was always playing the Clancy Brothers and Seekers records when I was young. I like folk music too. Thanks!

  7. I popped in for some entertainment, and got it. Thank you. I never saw live shows but the radio compensated for my loss.
