This is Tess Cottage. We talked to the owners who were keen gardeners. They said Thomas Hardy arrived one Summers day in a pony and trap and announced:

It must have been after Tess had paid for the new roof.

ReplyDeleteI had a feeling you didn't know the story. Hardy made life hard for women - which it mostly was anyway. I actually cried when I read the last bit of Jude the Obscure. I really hadn't been expecting such a tragic ending.
DeleteI didn't know the story. I thought Tess was going to be a great heroine and it wall end happy. Alas it was not to be. Jude The Obscure disturbed me when I read the book. I got diagnosed with HSV, and reading this actually made me feel like crawling and crying like a baby.
