Someone once wrote the definition of an hedge: A statement of man's arrogance against nature.
It's so very true. Especially living on the Gulf Stream here in Southern Ireland. I usually cut them at least five times a year. I have heard that we have ten months of growth. I am not surprised with all the rain we get.
Hedges define boundaries and offer privacy, shade and shelter and help to create a micro climate in the gardens.
They are also somewhat of a chore. Every year I leave the first trim a bit later in case there are birds nesting.
How often do you trim your hedges? Do you use hedge clippers or an electric or petrol hedge trimmer?
Apparently if you want to sell your house you should trim your Bush!

I have around 50 metres of privet hedge to contend with. I use a Bosch electric hedge cutter. I reckon to cut our hedges just three times between the end of May and mid-October. Unlike a fence, a hedge will never blow down.

Privet is very quintessentially English YP. A hedge is work and a stone wall (our favourite subject) can be functional and attractive. I wish I had planted something like Heypericum or Rugosa that flowers. A nice seaside hedge.

The Fuchsia hedges that you see in the West of Ireland, the Isle of Man and Cornwall originates in Chile. The fabulous Dicksonia tree ferns were originally ballast placed in empty convict ships returning from Van Demons land and Botany Bay.

We inherited a beech hedge when we moved in 25 years ago. It seems to serve no real purpose other than to make a dividing feature across the garden but the birds like to nest in it so we keep it. P has to climb the stepladder and uses an electric hedge trimmer to keep it from getting too tall. I have to close my eyes.

Delete200m of hawthorn and blackthorn here. I should trim it now whist the growth is still soft. It will need a full trim in the winter. I have to use a petrol trimmer as some of it is too far from a power point for an electric trimmer. Petrol trimmers are much heavier and it is quite hard work. But the days of larch lap fencing panels are long gone, fortunately.

ReplyDeleteWe get a contractor in to do it every four or five years! Front and back, we have very high hedges that are remnants of the woodland that our houses were built on. They give us and our neighbours a great deal of privacy, but at a £cost!

I have often asked on here why is silage allowed to be cut in late April when ground nesting birds and hares are rearing young. I have also read that some birds like wood pigeons are still nesting in September. I don't birds would nest in a roadside hedge but I could be wrong.
