G Is For Gary Moore.

Continuing with my A to Z of some of my favourite Rock bands/singers/ musicians.

Probably one of the most talented guitarists I have ever seen or listened to is Gary Moore who sadly is no longer with us.

Gary was born in Belfast and was a member of Thin Lizzy, Colloseum 11, Grand Slam and his own band and other collaborations.

I never saw him in Thin Lizzy but I have seen them (Lizzy) and I saw Gary Moore at the Garden Party in Milton Keynes Bowl in 1986.  It was a gorgeous summers day and it was a great day of Rock music with the likes of Mamas Boys, Magnum, Gary Moore's band, Jethro Tull and Marillion playing.

Gary Moore was a brilliant Blues and Heavy Rock guitarist.  Here's Gary and other  Thin Lizzy members playing ' Black Rose'.  Such a great rock song full of Irish folklore and you will recognise a few ballads tunes all entwined in Black Rose: "Where the mountains of Mourne come down to the sea"....   Enjoy.

  1. Great rock guitarists like Gary Moore played their instruments effortlessly. I just read about the bottle attack he suffered at Dingwalls in London in the 1970's. It affected his life and his music.

    1. It did affect his life and music YP and he had a big scar on his face. Parisienne Walkways and The Messiah Will Come Again are two of my favourite tunes of his. A brilliant musician.

  2. Well that made an interesting break in a working day. Mr B has some tale of celebrity encounter that involved Gary Moore and a leather jacket - but it's his story so we won't relate it here. He was clearly in awe of Gary Moore too. Don't you wish you could play guitar half as well?

  3. I play a very good pool cue and air guitar Tigger. It must be able to play an instrument and entertain people. I just listen to it and write and talk about it.

  4. I used to say that I could play the radio like nobody's business. Now that's outdated. I stream Pandora like nobody's business. (The times they are a changing....)

    1. A companion, unobtrusive- "Spirit Of Radio" - Rush comes to mind Debby. I like to listen to Rock songs on Spotify when I am walking the hills and boreens where I live.

  5. They are having a great time together there.
The Mountains of Mourne ... we used to see those on the horizon from our living room windows in our old house. Miss that view now.

  6. I loved that garden where you last lived JayCee. You made the right choice though being closer to town, amenities and public transport.

  8. Great band Rachel. I saw Lizzy in 1981 at Manchester Apollo but Gary had already left them and I had to wait until 1986 before I saw him play. Thanks for your music memories Rachel. I always enjoy reading about people's favourite gigs. You can't be live music can you?

    2. Agree - would love to have seen Kate Bush. She is one that got away. I saw Al Stewart at Hammersmith as well.

    3. I often watch Kate at Hammersmith on YouTube. My favourite all time concert was seeing Kansas.

    4. Picking a favourite is impossible - a bit like picking your favourite book, child or cat.

Knebworth 1975 was pretty good though. Having said that when I look at the pictures of it now it looks awful! All those skinny, grubby long haired people…of which I was one.

    5. I agree picking a favourite concert is nigh on impossible. Glastonbury 1989 was an incredible experience with 200000 revellers and living in a canvas city for 4 days.

    6. 200,000 revellers and under canvas for four days sounds awful to me now. Am glad I saw who I saw when I saw them…too old for uncomfortable stuff now. Don’t have much in the calendar except for Six Wives in Februrary

    7. I went to two festivals this year in England. I will go to at least one next summer but I will try to book some accommodation. I am tired of tents.

  10. There's some great live recordings of Gary Moore playing Hendrix classics on YouTube which I have bookmarked for the times when I need it.

  12. Gary Moore! Are there two of them I wonder? A friend was a fan a long while ago and collected a few albums that were never opened or played, he asked me to keep them safe, his ex was well known for selling anything for cigarette money. I think I still have them buried in a suitcase somewhere.
