Sugar Candy Mountain ("What About The Animals?")

I was talking to a barmaid in England last summer about the weather, family, Ireland, writing, England, music (It was a long conversation) and Heaven.  Yes Heaven.  My dear late mother use to say to me:

"Where ever I end up  David (Sunday name!) I will know somebody.  If I end up in Hell at least I will be warm."

I don't think Heaven is just looking at holiday photographs, supping "nice cups of tea" and singing hymns, do you?  I think it will be like Earth and you will get to see your loved ones again, see some super Rock groups, Rock super groups and football geniuses, cricket legends and see all your beloved pets too,

Any way I said to this barmaid:

"Do you believe in God and will we go to Heaven one day?"

She looked at me and said:

"Hmm..  I dunno?  It doesn't mention the animals going to Heaven in the bible and if they don't go there, I don't want to go there either".

She had a point.

But God made Heaven and Earth and every living creature.  So surely Heaven will be the same, won't it?

Have you read George Orwell's (Eric Blair) Animal Farm?  There is a Raven character called Moses.  He preaches to the hard working farm animals like Boxer the cart horse that they should work hard and one day they will get their eternal reward in Sugar Candy Mountain.  Nobody will need to work there and everything will be provided for free.  It's a parody on Stalinism and perhaps even religion.

What do you think dear readers, is there an after life for our pets?

  1. I don't think there are lots of cats souls out there, Dave. I still think of the good people going to heaven though but I am not sure why, but the nuns told us that if we were good we would be rewarded. Interesting post.

  2. Thanks Rachel. Heaven will be a dull place if there are no animals. I still look for our Jack Russell. She was so human like and surely she's gone to a better place? I would like to think so anyway. I think about my late parents every day and wonder how they all are. There's got to be more than just this life, hasn't there? Thanks Rachel.

  3. Hi David (yes, it's Sunday), I hope I don't meet all the animals I've eaten when I get to heaven. I think dogs are ok. I checked the Bible and where it says "dogs and harlots" won't be getting in it's explained that "dogs" is bible code for male prostitutes. So yes, looks like it's for the world's doggies. Having said that, I can think of a particular Rottweiler and a pair of Dobermans I hope never to meet again.

  4. Those Rottweiler and Dobermans will probably go to doggy hell Gwil. My Jack Russell liked Huddersfield Town because they are the Terriers. Suppose she could have supported Blackburn or Shamrock Rovers. Do Barking have a football team? Thanks for your comment Gwil!

  5. Interesting post and comments. Gwill has a point about all the animals we've eaten. If dogs and cats get into heaven then why not pigs, cows......our 'ancestor' the monkey and the highly intelligent dolphin.....
It's going to crowded up there...I would say if I believed in heaven.

    1. Very good points LA. Never thought about the highly intelligent Dolphin. So there will have to be lots of water. I suppose we will want to live in our own countries too? I would like to live in the Rock n Roll part and watch all the concerts for free. I think it could be crowded up there. Thanks!

  6. I have a few doggy friends who are (apparently) in the upstairs room, as heaven was called when I was a young girl.

  7. Love the upstairs room title for Heaven Valerie. I have heard this place described as God's Waiting Room. I hope my mother still doesnt watch Coronation Street. If there are soaps in Heaven I am not going. Thanks!
