The Music Was Better Forty Years Ago And The Passing Of A Legend.

You know when your getting old when you can't stand the music on the wireless (showing my age) radio, don't you?

One day recently when I was working on the island.  Abba ("Money, Money, Money") was on the radio ("wireless") one dinner time.  Then Blondie: "Picture This" came on!

I shook my head and said or announced:

"The music was better forty years ago".

The lads agreed with me.  The music was better forty years ago or even longer.

The lead singer of The Buzzzcocks passed away last week.  The news genuinely shocked me and I was very sad.  They were one of the best bands to come out of Lancashire in my opinion.  Up there with: The Smiths, Barclay James Harvest, The Beatles, 10 CC, Vander Graf Generator...?   Three minute songs that everybody could sing along and even dance too.

Punk was like the garage band scene or even writing a blog for free on the internet.  You didn't need money.  You just put a band together and off you went.  What's more working class than that?  It's like George Best or Wayne Rooney running on the pitch and showing the world what they can do.

Remember this ?:

Thanks for being a legend and inspiring so many Pete!

  1. You know you're getting old when you listen to the radio....never mind the music! Today they've got YouTube, iPods/phones ... I'm not exactly sure what these things are called. We only listen to the radio in the car now

  2. Thanks for your thoughts LA. I often listen to the radio on my mobile phone. I like to listen to popular music from previous decades than a lot of the music of today. You Tube is great that you can watch videos of your favourite bands. It also makes bands tour instead of relying on record sales. Nothing beats live music. Thanks.

  3. Great song, great Buzzcocks. I like all the old stuff, and do find it quite hard to get into modern day music but I am sure I could if I listened more regularly to the radio but I get fed up with so much talk and not enough music. I heard Gary Barlow on the radio on Sunday and he said about how you didn't need much money and nobody turned up for auditions, you just formed a band and got on with it. Thanks for your comment today on my blog, much appreciated. I had a bad day over the weekend with blogging!

  4. Thanks Rachel. I think there are still great new songs and bands but a lot of them are not mainstream. Folk, Indie and Prog Rock still keep going and appealing to people of all ages. Thanks for your comment and keep writing those compelling to read and entertaining blog posts!

  5. I listen to the radio simply because there's nothing worth watching on TV.

  6. Hi Valerie. Radio use to be called:"The theatre of the mind". I think you have got a good blog subject there. I wish terrestrial television had a film channel that showed all the classic films from way back when. Especially Basil Rathbone films. Thanks!

  7. Hi Dave (it's not Sunday), thanks for reminding me to switch the radio on. When I'm alone in the house as I am now I like to listen to Radio Stephansdom Classic FM. One of the few times I listen to pop music on the radio is when I'm doing my gentle pre-lunch exercises. And when I think back I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg at night. I entered one of the competitions and won a cube. It was like a radio, tv, tape etc. all in one cube. I've no idea what happened to it. I lost a hell of a lot of my stuff in the d.i.v.o.r.c.e as the Tammy Wynette song calls it. I don't miss it though. I remember it was very fiddly. Maybe I gave it away.
This past week I've been to two live musical performances: Leonard Bernstein's Wonderful Town and Edward Grieg's Peer Gynt. I spotted two men, they were Russians on holiday, leaving at the intermission and we begged their tickets which they were happy to give us. Russians are a very cultural and respectful people. I don't understand why all our various politicians can't get along together. I think they must be brainwashed. Or grossly uneducated. We are very lucky to live in Vienna.

  8. Thanks Gwil. I once stayed a week in Llandudno and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra were in town. I was only young and decided to have a saunter to see them. Here's me in my velvet blue jacket watching a live orchestra. They played all the classics and a great time was had by all.

You get some good Rock concerts in Bratislava too. My highlight was seeing Kansas in Warsaw in 2014. I only waited thirty years to see my favourite band in the world. You can't beat live music can you? Thanks.
