Plastic bottles cut in half and turned into plant cloches. They act like mini greenhouses. Retaining moisture and protecting cuttings from predators like slugs and snails.
The ones above have all rooted. I have taken the plastic bottles off them and I will use them to propagate more cuttings.
There are Cotoneasters, Hydrangeas, Hypericum, Hebes, Rugosa roses and are rooted cuttings propagated from our gardens.
You don't need money to make plants. Anyone else making shrub or hedge cuttings?
What a lot you've got!!
ReplyDeleteLorra. Like Cilla would say.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had the success you have with cuttings, my snowberry plants are still alive, but a few others don't look so good.
ReplyDeleteI always take lots of cuttings Marlene and the plastic bottles retain the moisture so well. I check them after about 3 weeks and gently yank one to see if its gives any resistance and if it does I know it's struck roots. Misting with a sprayer works if you tend to over water the cuttings. You can also put cuttings in a slit trench in the veg garden outside and they will be ready for lifting the following Autumn. Organic hormone rooting powder definitely helps.
ReplyDeleteMy hydrangeas have curled up and died. They did last a couple of summers. It was probably too hot this year and I might have over watered them. Pity I can't get one of your cuttings.
ReplyDeleteI would gladly give you some Hydrangea plants Linda if you lived closer. They can be rooted in a glass of water. It might be worth you going out and finding some healthy bushes and taking some cuttings?
ReplyDeleteYou are an industrious chap Dave. You put me and many other blokes to shame but it's laudable that you create new plants and grow a lot of your own food. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI see few people YP living in the countryside next to the sea. I call it dormitory housing. People go to work and come home at tea time to eat and sleep. I quite envy your life style and where you live. I suppose the best of both worlds would be to live in a village, town or city and also have a place next to the sea or in the countryside? I still dream of living in Portugal particularly in winter. It's good to have an hobby other than writing my blog. Thanks!
