The Price Of Coal, Logs And Kindling.

Taken from the outskirts of  a Cork city garage forecourt on Monday afternoon.

I read online that the Irish government puts 5.85 Euros carbon tax on a bag of coal or solid fuel.

They are putting another 80 Cents on a bag next Spring and 17 Euros on a tank of heating oil.

We are burning wood offcuts from a boat thats just had a revamp.

I hope it's not a cold winter like 2010.  How much do we spend heating our homes from September to March?

I haven't ordered any oil yet.  We light the stove in the front room and have put more blankets on the bed.

I read also a certain supermarket is selling a really cheap electric heater that only costs 22 Cents an hour to run.  I am thinking of getting one.  Anyone know if they any good?

If you fancy an hot Toddy nightcap remember you pay 11 Euros in VAT on a bottle of whiskey or whisky if it is Scottish!

  2. Hide behind the couch stuff JayCee. My mother told me her father was a window cleaner and he used to go collecting his wages on a Friday ( payday) and he would look through the newly clean window and people would jump and hide behind the couch.😊 Thanks!

  3. We only have gas central heating like many homes, we had a new boiler 3 years ago, and upgraded our windows to triple glazing, the extra glass layer makes a huge difference, we saved to make the changes in hope we can stay warm in cooler months. Taxes on 'dirty fuels' are only getting higher, our hot toddy is drinking chocolate. Marlene, Poppypatchwork

    1. Yes Marlene we get clobbered with carbon taxes don't we? I will have to start collecting driftwood and cutting branches to save fuel for the stove.

  4. This is my idea for keeping warm on cold winter nights. Erect a kind of tent or greenhouse structure around the family's main sofa. It will be made of clear see-through material and draught-proof. The family gets inside - including the dog and you zip up. As in an igloo, body heat should keep everybody snug and warm but having a low wattage greenhouse heater in there would boost the temperature. I call my invention a "Snuggle Shed" and it is available in different sizes from the Pudding Products online store.

  5. Are there any green grants for your "Snuggle Sheds"? You could grow vegetables in the lounge?

    1. There would be little spare room but I guess you could grow a few herbs in pots. If you needed to use the toilet, a potty would be a good idea in order to avoid unzipping the "Snuggle Shed". Other members of the family would have to close their eyes.

  6. I wonder how much our ton of olive wood will cost us this year. We have it ordered but are waiting for our neighbour to deliver. He usually gives us a 'friendly' price but it has gone up in the last few years from 100 euros to 120, 160 last last year. We havent had heating il in many years although we have central heating installed. Our wood burner does a great job
A bottle of Jamesons is still reasonable. We can have a hot toddy and turn on the electric blanket before retiring for a good nights snooze

  7. Everything seems to be going up every week LA. A 70CL bottle of Jamesons is 32 Euros in Lidl of all places. In Tenerife and Portugal you can buy spirits for 7 Euros and 200 Benson and Hedges for 25 Euros. They are 18 Euros for 20 here.

    1. Heavens. A bottle of Jamesons is around 20 euros here. It should be a lot cheaper in it's own country!!!

  8. Yep. Eleven Euros tax is put on a bottle of whiskey here in Ireland Linda. No wonder people go on sun holidays because everything is so much cheaper and you're guaranteed wall to wall sunshine. It's been pouring it down here all day today. Just for a change.😊
