Survival Food Or Luxury?

We went to Iceland yesterday.  Not the country, the frozen food store!  They also sell tinned food like my favourite: Heinz BEANZ: Baked beans with Pork sausages in a rich tomato sauce.  We bought twelve tins of them!  I think I could live off them, if I had too.

What food could you survive on?  Some of us would like in a flat over a pub or a kebab house.  Imagine living in a pub with Real Ale?  But say you got snowed in this week, what would you survive on?  Have you filled your fridge?  Not with just beer!

  1. How much do those cost each? They are sometimes on offer for 75p a can here. When we did the food storage challenge a few years ago we ran out of nuts first. Although I cant do without pasta.

    1. I would have to go to a town for an Iceland. That used to be Bejams didnt it over here. My cousin is moving to Cork. She is tempting me with her new house she is buying. Are the houses very cheap in Cork?

    2. Redruth and Truro both have Iceland stores Sol. Have look at Daft.ie for house prices. You will find really cheap rural properties in North Kerry...

    3. 220,000EU sorry I dont have the sign on this laptop yet. 220k gets you a 3 bed bungalow with a bit of land, surrounded by woodland. its insane prices and there seems to be a lot of work in Cork in IT. that is why they are having to move there as their jobs with the IT firm are going there from London due to Brexit. They are so happy as they have a tiny flat and 2 children they wont have a mortgage!

    4. Gosh! Put in 50000 Euro's on Daft.ie and see what you find nation wide. You will be amazed! Rural Ireland can be really cheap. Brexit is going to change a lot of lies, isn't it?

  3. I used to love these when I was a kid. Haven't seen them in many many years. Now I'd live off instant noodles, but I'd still need hot water for those.

  4. They're great aren't they? Yes instant noodles would keep you alive. Pot Noodles are OK. I .hated Pot Rice. Thanks LA!

    2. There use to be a Baked Bean pizza for sale in the supermarkets. I haven't seen them or Pot Rice for years!

  5. I like these beans and sausages too and buy the small tins and have them regularly. I could happily live on them and I suppose in a way I do. They are obviously popular still because all the supermarkets sell them around here.

  6. Hi Rachel. They are always worth keeping stocked up in the food cupboard. Especially if there is heavy snow or power cuts. We have a small multi fuel stove with one ring in the front room for power cuts. I could live on the beans and sausages too.

  7. My freezer is filled with ready made meals. It's permissible at my age to do that and sensible because cooking for one is a chore. Actually I do cook on Saturdays but nothing fancy. I'd like to try the Heinz beans and sausages but the tins are too big. I can only manage a little tin and they can't get sausages in them. Tough luck for me, eh?

    1. You sound like you're well organized Valerie.

You can get plastic Tupperware containers with lids which will hold half a ton of beans and store in the fridge.

    2. Silly word suggestions on my phone. It should say half a can of beans. I love baked beans. But half a Ton is a bit much, even for me.

  8. I originally put tin and it changed it to ton. So I substituted the word tin for can.

  9. I haven't got a freezer so eat quite a lot of things that come in tins like the beans and sausages and tinned tongue, lovely with baked beans and a salad, and lots of fishy things in tins. I bought some Glenryk pilchards the other day, all good standby stuff, as well as tins of soup.

  10. We have two chest freezers and always try to keep them full to capacity. I miss Baxter's soups and Mulligatawny soup. It's always worth stocking up in the winter, especially for us rural dweller. Thanks!

  13. There's a mini-supermarket called 'Bobby's British Shop' in the city. They have things like baked beans, shredded wheat, black treacle, bovril, etc..
I sometimes shop there when I feel the urge. To answer your question, we eat lots of lentils here. Men are painting the kitchen today and laying floor covering tomorrow. A Greek lady is feeding us. It feels bit like being on holiday.

  14. The British shop sounds great Gwil. Good luck with the home improvements. Any chance of you posting a photo on your blog?

    1. I'll try and remember to take my camera next time I go that way. They might even have a website with a photo. Try googling Bobbys British Shop, Wien.

    2. I could only find pictures of hp sauce and crisps. None of the exterior. Looks like they have two shops now. They seem to have opened on Mariahilferstrasse, one of the main shopping streets.

    3. Can you get any British beer in Vienna, Gwil? Not that there is anything wrong with Dunkels.
