Taking A Walk On The North Side.

I went for an eight mile walk along the road today.  I put on my "rainy day" waterproofs and took my hiking stick, walking shoes, mobile phone (radio and 'Spotify' (Kansas) headphones) in one ear, cereal bars, reflective high viz jacket, floppy hat, half a bottle of Lucozade Orange and a red eating apple with me.  It's like going on an expedition or is it an expedition? Or even an exhibition?

I have noticed motorists are getting use to me walking along the edge of the tarmac recently.  The majority of them indicate and pull out away from "yours truly".  I think ("my head hurts!") cars and lorries.., are suppose to be at least a Metre away and the pedestrian HAS the right of way on the road.  They call it the RULES OF THE ROAD in Hibernia ("land of eternal winters"), the Romans name for Ireland!  Yet they never came here.  So how did they know where it was?

The speed limit is supposed to be 80 Kilometres per hour.  Which is in my humble opinion is ABSOLUTE ridiculous on boreens  and tarmac country roads made for horses and carts.

I met my new friend on the way West and talked about the runaway train called Brexit, the weather and of course the local history..   Then I walked a few miles further and it started raining and so I turned back and my new friend was clearing moss from his drive and we talked for another twenty minutes.

Then it rained again and I walked home.

Have you been on a walk lately?  I think I must of been a dog in another life.  All I want to do is go for a walk!

Here's an appropriate song for you:  I once saw the great man at Milton Keynes Bowl in about 1986.  There must be some great Rock concerts in Heaven.

  3. The daylight hours are so short that I can barely find the time for a walk. Today I managed to squeeze in a 45 minute gentle run just before darkness fell today. It's a while since I've walked any sort of distance.

    1. You always put us to shame with your running prowess Gwil. I have to walk or else I get cabin fever. Thanks.

    2. I do walk when I have time. In winter the days are short and the forests are dark. I have a head torch but I don't use it much. My runs tend to be relatively short at this time of year. My total of 23 kms in 5 days is hardly 'prowess' Dave.

    3. True story just now on news
Today in Austria a youth aged 14 found himself stuck in chimney. He had to be rescued by the fire brigade. He told them was 'playing at being Father Christmas'.

    4. Fair play to you Gwil. They recommend every one should walk twelve Miles a week to keep fit. Some weeks I walk forty miles and a wet week like last week I only walked 12 Miles. I walk because it takes away my back pain and to keep reasonably fit.

The Austrian chimney story is a riot. You couldn't make it up could you?

  4. Parisienne Walkways is my favourite track of his Philip. I love Thin Lizzy (saw them in Manchester in 1981) and I saw Gary's band in 1986. Eric Bell is another ex Lizzy member and superb Blues player. We have seen him a couple of times in Bantry. Thanks

  5. That track takes me back. I went into Norwich today and wandered around amongst the Christmas shoppers and went into a big church in the centre and a man was singing. I asked who he was and was told he goes into the church at the same time everyday and sings but nobody knows who he is. It was quite uplifting, and unusual. Glad you enjoyed your walk. Thanks Dave.

  6. Thanks Rachel. We once saw a young busker lad in Altrincham singing an Oasis song and he was brilliant. I always wondered if he made it. The Norwich church singer sounds very similar. Please record him and write a post. Thanks!

  7. Us townies have no idea what country roads/lanes are like but I do recall a walk down a Lincolnshire lane that someone describes as 'quiet'with no mention of cars that zoomed by, honking or shouting for us to 'get out of the way.'

  8. Hi Valerie. I believe towns and villages have pavements, public transport, street lights too. We don't even have a can bank. Then politicians come round canvassing. Why thinks me? Thanks.
