I water my plants every morning. Sometimes I check my cuttings to see if they have roots. Here are three Sedums and a Nepeta plant. I made them three weeks a go. All you do is get some scissors and take off a cutting a couple of inches long or so. Leave just two leaves at the top of the cutting and remove any surplus leaves and place your cutting in a tray or flower pot full of compost or in a glass of water. I placed mine in a tray and didn't bother with hormone rooting powder. I also pinched out the tip of the cutting so the new plant will go bushy instead of growing tall and leggy.
You see, know-how is important. Now I know, I can have another go. First, though, I need to sort the grass out.

ReplyDeleteI use those little jars that herbs come in, and water. They are the perfect size for an offshoot or cutting, small enough for the leaves to rest on the rim. At any one time there will be a selection on my kitchen windowsill, so I remember to top up the water level. I'd say I get at least 90% success rate, no matter what the plant. Easy-peasey!

ReplyDeleteNormal hydrangeas I seem to have 100% success rate. everything else, maybe 4/10. Climbing hydrangeas I did 4 cuttings only one has taken. I dont know what I did wrong. I have one Ceanothus (Californian blue lilac) that has taken, I made about 20 cuttings. I am hoping to have some flowers to cut next year and to have colour most of the year. I have no idea how to achieve this but I am trying .
ReplyDeleteHi Sol. I have lost a few cuttings this week due the sun scorching them. Its always a balancing act getting the compost not too wet or dry. Catmint and Sedum are my easiet cuttings to take and roses and laurel can seem an eternity to root. I think sometimes you have just got to leave them and wait. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteThanks Angela. Overgrown veg plots and gardens don't daunt me. You can make a lot of progress with a petrol strimmer at the moment. Are you having a garden part to your allotment with flowers and maybe a lawn? Are you going to make raised beds? Japanese winter onions can planted in August. Look forward to following your allotment progress.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a strimmer and I will wait a while and offer jars of homemade jam/chutney to one of the people who are fast becoming friends at the plot for a loan .No flowers or lawn for me .We inherited a lovely potting bench , table and chairs and a bench . I want to sit and admire the veg when it comes . I have runners , leeks and sprout plants in a cold frame at home ready to go in soon .The raised beds have collapsed but I will work on them .Japanese onions - tell me more .Sorry about length of reply but you did ask . Maybe I could e mail you else where ?
ReplyDeleteYou could always hire a strimmer Angela? Saying that they are worth buying. Japanese onions are an onion that you plant in September. You can start them off in seeds or in setts.
