I Miss My Allotment. Thoughts About Rural Isolation.

We will have lived in Ireland  nineteen years next year.  I was thirty eight when we came over to live here.  So I suppose we have lived here half my life?  Well not half my real age of 55.  I was 38 when  we came here.  So that's  19 isn't  it..  Eh?

One thing that I really miss is watching live football, cricket, heavy rock concerts, public transport, pubs that sell real ales,  being able to buy English cans or bottled beer from the supermarkets, massive  car boot sales and also allotments.  That's ten things Dave.  I should have took off my socks and shoes and used my toes to count.

Allotment people are the salt of the earth.  They are friendly and share a common bond in cultivating the earth and growing vegetables and fruit.  They may even have a shed to escape from the missus, read their dog ears copies of "Big Girls Weekly"  or drink a few tins of beer or home brew?

I like having my own patch of Gods earth here in Ireland, especially my polytunnel.  But gosh it can be a twee bit quiet at times.  Allotments are places where you have a laugh and a joke , put the world to rights and tell people  how they are doing it all wrong.  Well they were twenty years  a go.

I wish I could paint a picture for you of a typical allotment that was next to mine: home made sheds made out of plywood, corrugated roofs with a rusty patina, lumps of concrete hold down the sheets, polytunnels made out of old plastic water pipe tubing and covered in polythene, supermarket trolleys with wheels that have a mind of their own and now the trolleys are full of drying onions, vegetables sown in lines like army regiments, an old front door for a gate..?

Rural isolation is peaceful and there are no rules or regulations or an allotment committee telling you what to do.  But there is a lot to be said for the camaraderie and mickey taking of an allotment.  Which would you prefer an allotment with other like minded gardening comrades or a patch of land of your own in the countryside where you are on your own?   Wouldn't  mind an pub like Wetherspoon's that serves real ales.  Suppose the grass is always greener on to'ther side  of  the fence?

When its rainy nearly every day and cold the rural isolation can get to you a little bit.  Thank goodness for television, radio, books, the internet and for blogs and country walks.  I have walked ten miles already this week.  The veg plot and the gardens are too wet to do anything at the moment.  Suppose one could find some potting on to do in the polytunnel?

  1. Sorry to hear you are feeling a little isolated. If it is any consolation, it is also quite easy to feel isolated when you are surrounded by other people. Hearing loss in particular often means I cannot join in when everyone else is enjoying themselves, but at least I can watch them having a good time, which makes me feel happy too. Enjoy your walks inbetween the rain showers.

  2. Thanks for your comment Jaycee. The rural isolation gets to us at times. The gardening work drys up too. Think I need to plan an holiday in the sun, a city break or a rock festival for next year? Least February we went to the Algarve for a week. Wish I could go there for the winter. Thanks again.

    1. I think the Algarve can be pretty cold too in winter. Our flight to Madeira was diverted there one February and we had to spend a very cold, wet and windy night there (although in a nice warm hotel).

  3. It was nice last February and the previous January in the day time. We rented a villa and it was cold at night. Last year we stayed in an hotel and it was very warm and English people complained about the baked beans not being Heinz. Didn't you Dave? No I didn't complain to the management. I just moaned to each other and the other diners agreed. Seville is very hot in Winter. Thanks Jaycee.

  4. I dont know if you remember but years ago, we lived next to an Italian family. They emigrated to the UK in the 50's. Did you read my blog then? Well as it was they grew huge amounts of food and so did we in out gardens. Both pure south facing beautiful light as the gardens were so long the houses behind you struggled to see. We used to trade food over the fence and the wife would make amazing food with it and hand it back over the fence. We traded our home brew and grapes for amazing Italian meals. it was a shame that we then had another neighbour who moved in the other side of us who I want to say had some form of mental illness but she was just awful. Our little eden was lost and we moved again. The soil here is terrible, the wind cutting and generally it is too cold. We had a -4 oC start to the day yesterday. I live in the hope that at some point we can afford a green house or poly tunnel. I have a really old book of kitchen gardens in Scotland. Unfortunately on reading them, the gardens are walled and have glass houses. Else I will be growing what my neighbour here calls Peasant foods, the ones his granny cooked him. Swede, turnips, carrots, potatoes. I long to have mizuna, rocket etc but the wind runs it and it shrivels and dies no matter the wind break I put up

  5. Thanks for that Sol. I have missed your posts. I do recall you mentioning your Italian neighbour's. My gardening methods have changed living next to the gulf stream. Years ago in the northwest of England and North Wales I would rough dig the soil and the frosts would break down the clouds into lovely friable soil. Now I find we can go months before being able to get on the soil. Thank goodness for my polytunnel, books, blogs and walking in the countryside next to the sea. I miss the camaraderie of other allotment holders and they could always 'talk' a good allotment. Our long term plan is to move to Portugal. First of all for winter and then for longer. Good luck with your growing Sol.

  6. Wonderful to see the allotment architecture, a bastion of ingenuity and recycling.

  7. Totally agree Cumbrian. Waste not want not, Heath Robinson meets Asda supermarket trolleys. I believe in Denmark some allotment grows have built sheds nay house and live in them. Wouldn't mind living in an allotment shanty town. I could learn how to brew home brew. Talking about homebrew. When I lived in Blighty. I heard of somebody who use to sell his home brew! Ten Bob a bottle. That's even cheaper than Wetherspoon's. Thanks Cumbrian.

  8. The allotment site I used to be on was more or less as you described, Dave. Everyone seemed to be named 'Reg'. The annual rent was £3.50 a year for a full sized plot.

  9. Brilliant allotment memories Philip. There was even organized "Brews ready Reg" times. Mill workers now retired still had their brew times at 5he set time. Three Pounds fifty for a full plot sounds a bargain. You made me smile.

  10. I thought men the world around have a shed or workshop to retire to. You miss much more. Nice list.

    1. Hi Joanne. I have my polytunnel and outbuildings but it's people I miss most. Especially gardening people. I think there are for and against living in the countryside. Perhaps if one lived on the outskirts of a village or even had an additional apartment in a city. They would have the best of both worlds.

  13. You should move to Heysham. There are allotments, or there were, on the hill above the cricket ground. And for football Preston Both Ends is not far away.

  14. Hi Gwil. I use to like going to Morecambe. I would love to live in Dorset or Herefordshire but property is too expensive. Use to go to Preston flea market on a Tuesday morning. Bargains galore. Thanks.

    1. Hi Dave, what about Wales then? 2-0 against Hungary. Can't believe they've qualified but they have! They'll be singing in the hills.

    2. Good old Giggsy. Cometh the hour. Should be a great tournament and the final is at Wembley.

    3. Germany gave N Ireland a football lesson. 6-1 I think it was. Could've been more. Great entertainment, though. But why do fans feel the need to expose their beer bellies to the cameras in freezing cold weather?

    4. Imagine if the final at Wembley is England versus Germany again but this time with VAR? Perhaps the beer bellies are Newcastle United fans?

  16. You're right Valerie a human voice does cheer the soul. I need a laugh and a joke. That's why I miss my allotment so much. Especially the joking and Mickey taking. Thanks.

Just think, after Christmas the days start to gradually get longer, so it won't be long until summer Dave! :)
