We recently watched Alan Titchmarsh harvesting new potatoes in the summer and placing them in an empty biscuit tin and replacing the tin lid and planting them in the allotment until Christmas. Sounds a good idea. Anybody had success with the biscuit tin new potatoes planting method?
I know quite a few readers have veg plots and I thought I would show you how the spuds are doing. The shrub and perennials cuttings are also doing well and you can still see KALE growing in the right hand corner of the olde polytunnel. There's only me who eats it. All I get is pull a face and "me not like" when I mention or bring it into the kitchen. Think I won't bother growing it again.
So what you having with the new potatoes on Christmas day Dave? We have decided to have striploin steak and a all day buffet, "help yourself" menu with dishes full of sprouts and carrots and pigs in blankets, home made sherry trifle, sausage rolls, just general buffet stuff. No Turkey though. I hate left overs. So what will you be eating on Christmas day? Anybody growing new potatoes at the moment? The Brussels are nearly ready too.
The spuds look very healthy. We have had problems here with potato blight in our plot in previous years so OH just grows a few in containers now. Haven't tried any for this time of year though. Too cold and wet here.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jaycee. Sarpo Mira are worth trying. Hungarian potatoes with a good blight and slug tolerance. We normally plant Orla but this year we bought cheap seed potatoes from Lidl. We only grow earlies and I strim the tops off them if blight strikes. I like container growing and even grew potatoes on a windowsill when we lived in a flat. Purchasing the polytunnel made vegetables growing a lot easier and you can still garden on a rainy day.
ReplyDeleteI might have a pheasant. I bought one today to have Saturday night. I had one last weekend and got three meals off it. It cost me £4.25 this week, cheaper than last weeks £5. Pheasant and chipolatas and listen to the radio all day probably on Christmas Day and a bottle of red wine, Christmas pudding and a walk in the afternoon. No other plans.

DeleteAs Christmas main course usually a filleted carp lightly fried in olive oil and butter. Accompanied by potatoes and veg in season. To drink probably a good Italian Prosecco.
ReplyDeleteHi Gwil. Carp is popular in Poland on Christmas eve rather than Christmas day. Lidl are selling a magnum of Prosecco for 20 Euros. They should pay me or give me a job blogging for them. I like opening a malt like Dalwhinnie on Christmas Day.
