I first featured the "Onion Seller' statue in December 2017. There's a lot of talk about controversial statues and the removal of them this week. Here's one that celebrates ordinary people not politicians...:
We found the 'Onion Seller' statue at Coal Quay in Cork city. It's a sculpture by Seamus Murphy.
The statue commemorates the 'Shawlies' who were women market traders who sold their wares there. I think it's great how the statue remembers working class people who lived and worked there.
Statues can be controversial and stir emotions. For me the 'Onion Seller' stirs warmth and dignity. The 'Trinity' statue of Best, Law and Charlton makes me happy. A statue of a politician like Thatcher makes me annoyed.

It's a difficult subject. Statues represent people of their time, but are now being judged by today's standards.I think we need to acknowledge that the wealth of today is built on the accepted behaviours of yesterday. Yes, it might have been wrong, and distasteful to us, but we cannot change history nor should we forget just how much of the education and arts have been supported by people whose past behaviour we now disapprove of.

Good points the veg artist. Some people would find a lot of these statues very controversial. Queen Victoria for example. I prefer statues of more 'humble' people like the shawlies and Molly Malone in Dublin. Phil Lynott is another favourite statue of mine. I once saw him with the rest of Thin Lizzy in concert.

The onions they sold were the large Spanish type onions,I believe. I remember them coming around on their bikes. Think they still come to a few markets here in Wales.

Yes YP. I agree. Statues should champion ordinary working class people. You take some wonderful photos. I saw some wonderful workers murals on the side of buildings in Warsaw. Social Realism in a art form.

I have been suffering from a deadly disease (HERPES) for the past 3 years now, I had spent a lot of money going from one places to another, from churches to churches, hospitals have been my home every day residence.
