I spent half an hour watering the plants this morning with the gun on the hosepipe. Then I spent another ten minutes looking for the sprinkler.
Why oh why do they make or paint gardening tools green? Why not paint them bright red or orange?
Anyway I found the sprinkler and the spudatoes are having a good drink.

Our reservoir water levels are very low at the moment and the Water Board are close to issuing a hosepipe ban. Our garden pond is also noticeably shallower than usual. We use our water butts to collect rainwater but there's not much left in them. We have some rain forecast for Wednesday but may not be very much. We could do with a well like you.

Morning JayCee. I watched a programme about Israel a few weeks ago. They went to a desalination plant purifying salt water. I don't know why they don't have them in Europe. Countries like Ireland could export water we get that much rain. The best thing about well water is it doesn't contain manmade chemicals and apart from the maintenance and drilling a well, it's free.

DeleteWe have to connect a second hosepipe to reach the veg plots here, if it's just the greenhouse and pots we can manage with the one that is connected to our outside tap. We always use a gun (ours is yellow, and lives in a porch, so we've never lost it). I have never had to water so much, so early in the year. If this carries on, there'll be a drought!
ReplyDeleteHi the veg artist. We also have two hosepipes connected to each other. I could do with another. I sometimes move it to another tap to water the pots outside the houses or use the watering can. I believe May was the hottest on record. Plus we had the storm. Plants in pots never seem to have enough water and the cheap peaty compost cakes. I think you're right about the drought.

ReplyDeleteat the last house the previous owner had an irrigation system put it. there was a solar panel timer and it turned on twice a week. only in the veg beds and one border (the other border had all med plants in it and didnt need it). if we moved somewhere again and I had a more manageable garden, I would invest in that system. it saved hours and gave me more gardening time and getting those weeds out of the veg beds

ReplyDeleteYou can buy fluorescent sticky tape and paint to mark your tools (one day I will get round to it)
ReplyDeleteWe have the 60ft tunnel as raised beds and have laid leaky hose in the beds. We turn it on for a couple of hours a day. We have 8 IBC to store rainwater and also a borehole.
I shall do the same with the new tunnel. In the 3rd tunnel we have a gutter system with Lidl flower pots at the bottom. So we just have to fill the gutters. When we have time we will use some cistern floats to make this automatic.
Keeps us busy while we are isolated !
Now picking courgette , broad beans, french beans, asparagus, lettuce and 'greens' from the tunnels.

Sounds like you have a very good irrigation system Kathy. I have hundreds probably over a thousand perennials and shrubs in pots that need watering every day at the moment. think the weather is changing so hopefully we won't need to water everyday. We have cabbages and lettuce ready and the new potatoes are flowering in the polytunnel. Thanks.
DeleteI always feel slightly guilty about watering plants with pure, treated water but if I didn't do it in this record breaking spring my vegetables would wither and die. I gave everything a good soaking on Saturday and I will do the same tomorrow. I just heard a "Tish" from my can of Twisted Knots American IPA from the Lidl brewery. Do they have those small cans in Ireland?
ReplyDeleteHi YP. Rainwater is worth collecting. The coca cola cans have changed to taller and thinner cans recently. Never seen Twisted Knots IPA. We don't see English bitter either but there's lots of foriegn lagers and Heineken...
