Shopping For Japanese Onion Sets And Henry Vacuum Bags.

Tiz the time of year when I go shopping for my onion sets.  So we went in Woodies in Tralee and I purchased two packets of 'Electric' red onions and 'Shenshyu' onion sets.

The wife went off down an aisle looking for Henry vacuum cleaner bags.  Unfortunately I am sad to say she found some.  What's wrong with a house brush and dust pan or even a Ewbank?  They don't use electricity and they don't make a noise!

I've been growing my 'Japs' for donkeys years.  You plant them now in the vegetables garden and they will be ready to harvest next June before the maincrop summer onions are ready.

Japanese onions are so resilient to the gales and snow and rain and they really are tough beggars.  They also have a good taste.  I might plant some in fish boxes in 'Portugal' my polytunnel like I did last year?  To be honest they don't mind being planted outside.

Anyone else grow Winter onions?

  1. Woodies in Tralee sounds like it could have come from a song.
I don't eat onions, they give me horrible heartburn, but yours do look good.

  2. There was a great article about Henrys in The Guardian a few weeks ago. The hose fittings still use oil drum thread.

  3. Now now. Mrs Dave knows best!! A vacuum cleaner sucks up the dust and doesn't just spread it around, specially in the corners. So it's onion planting time. I shall buy some little 'bulbs', and start grubbing around for those potatoes I planted in pots at the beginning of summer. I wonder if we have a few new spuds?

    1. Hi Linda. I've seen potatoes growing in the Algarve in Winter so why not try to grow some in Poros?

  4. Nope! No one else in western Europe grows winter onions apart from you Mr Northsider! I am glad we haven't got a bloody Henry with his funny face! A Dyson is a bit quieter I think.

  7. Thank you Rachel. I love Portugal and the people are so friendly and kind. Would love to spend my winters over there, maybe longer.

  8. I wonder...you've spoken of using the dog's shampoo a few times. Mix that with your aversion to vacuums, and the question begs an answer. Is there an Irish remake of The Shaggy DA in the works?

  9. Could be Debby. 2021 and they can't invent a silent vacuum cleaner.
