Have The Supermarkets Been Reading My Blog About Freezing Onions?

We went Christmas shopping the other day before the world and the wife descend on the shops.

Remember back in September when I posted a blog about us slicing and chopping our organic home grown onion bags an placing them in small freezer bags and putting them in the freezer?

Well we noticed now Dunnes Stores are doing the same and selling them for a Euro.

We made a chilli last night and took a bag of our readily frozen chopped and sliced onions and placed them in the pan.

We are getting like M &S with our ready washed and chopped veg.

Do you freeze your home grown onions and vegetables?

  1. We can buy frozen chopped onions here too. I bet they cost more than a euro though. Strange thing to find here. You really have started a new trend. I wonder if they'll have brussel sprouts at xmas

  3. Very nice Marlene. They still taste fresh months after you have picked and frozen them. Just hope we don't have power outages this winter.

  4. People can get very sniffy about frozen vegetables, but if they're frozen immediately after harvesting, I see nothing wrong with them. Frozen vegetables are very useful.

  5. I agree with you Jabblog. Especially if you grow them yourself and freeze them. Especially if you get a glut like we did this year with our tomatoes and onions.

  6. We have homegrown raspberries, brambles, runner beans and apple (sauce) in our freezer. You should sue Dunnes for stealing your onion idea.

  7. I buy a lot of frozen veg and have been using the Co-Op frozen onions for several months now. It's the most convenient way for me to get the freshest veg that we can't grow ourselves.

  8. Excellent YP. We have 3 chest freezers full of our homegrown vegetables and ham and pork and frozen food from the supermarket. It's good to go around different supermarkets to see what is on offer even though we don't know where to find anything. Perhaps I should put supermarket browsing on my blog profile YP? I would be happy with some Dunnes stores shares or beer tokens.

  9. Good point JayCee. If you can't buy it fresh buy it frozen. The freshness is sealed and frozen the same day. I suppose fish caught on trawlers and immediately frozen is the same. He was clever man that Captain Birdseye. Didn't he invent the refrigerator? Cool beer was a might invention to.

  10. Yes, I freeze both fruit and veg as well as cook a batch and freeze.
Freezing onions is a good idea... One session of tears , boxed up and meal making is much quicker!!

  11. The manual rotary onion chopper prevents any tears GZ. We use to freeze them in supermarket carrier bags but now put them in one onion (first full) freezer bags. Very convenient and quick. Batch and Freeze is a great motto!

  12. Sure do. Onions and peppers both. I let the onions dehydrate just a little before throwing them in the freezer because they have so much moisture. I freeze them in gallon bags, take the bag out and give it a good thump on the table to break things up and shake out what I need.

    1. Good idea Debby to let them dehydrate before freezing. We find one chopped onion is enough for four people.

  13. I also do as you do...browse the grocery stores. I may walk out with nothing, but I also find some awfully nice sales. Today's find? Frozen Lobster cakes. Normally $8.99. They were marked down to $5.84 because they were getting close to the 'best by' date. Today, I happened to stop in. They all had $2.00 off coupons. I checked the expiry and saw that today was the last day the store could sell them. $3.84! I gathered the four packages from their freezer and brought them home to mine.

    1. Yes it's knowing the best time when to go when the reduce stuff. I knew someone who use to go to the supermarket at 9.30 on a Thursday when they reduced the weeks meat prices.

  14. Can you promise me they won't go squishy when they thaw? I'd thought they had such a high water content their cells would burst and they'd end up a slimy mess!

  17. I rummaged in the freezers here this week and found pumpkin and gooseberries. I'm currently squeezing my way through a bucket of lemons and freezing the juice.
