I often have conversations with people I know about the price of a pint or alcohol. So why don't we have one on here?
I have decided to have a bit of a dry/dryish January and save a few shillings or Euros even.
Supermarket beer is still relatively cheap compared to pub beer prices. You can stay in your scruffs and you don't get cold but you never get to socialise apart from social media and on here and maybe an odd chat with someone other than your immediate family. Well that's rural living for you in winter.
One can buy 8 cans of Guinness for 17.20 Euros including your deposit for the "Return" scheme we have here in Ireland.
You would pay 5.50 at least for a pint in a pub. Times that by 8 and you will see why I choose to drink at home.
It looked like the "Black Stuff". It was a lot milder taste but it wasn't bad. Have you tried it? Would I drink it again? Maybe. I wouldn't pay for a pint of it on draught in a pub though.I very rarely drink in pubs in Ireland say at a very rare rock concert or maybe if we visit some where like Dingle in the summer.
When it's nice to quench one's thirst sat outside at a pub at a beer table with a couple of pints of lager or Guinness. I tend to sup (drink) lager in summer and stout during winter.
I never thought the day would come when ordinary people could not afford to go out for a gargle or pints.
Plus taxis here are fifteen Euros each way and that is if you can get one on a weekend night?
I would rather have a good drink of real ales or cider in the West of England or Kent when it's a prog rock festival and visiting famous literary connections like Dorset.
I always seek out a very well known pub chain who offer food and drink at incredibly reasonable prices. Like 2.72 for a pint of real ale or a Dorset cider.
I also seek out English and Irish bars when I go on sun holidays to places like Tenerife or the Algarve. Draught beer and wine is so inexpensive over there.
We do go in Portuguese bars too and we go in Lidl and the prices are far different than England or Ireland Lidl prices. Isn't that the story of the Euro?
Alcohol duty is the big difference in other countries and the hospitality tax in cafes and pubs is 13 percent in Ireland when it could be 9 percent. What is it in Blighty or across the pond?
Any way I have decided to cut back on my home drinking. I'm not giving up. I am just cutting down.
So I had a look at zero alcohol in the supermarkets. Have you tried it?
Discount supermarket price for four cans of Guinness. It's 9 Euros fifty for cans of the real "black stuff".What would you drink instead of alcohol?
The non alcohol beer tastes good. Even K has tried it. The price? Can't remember but I don't think there's that much difference . I've never seen non alcohol wine. If I don't want to drink too much In add club soda or the dreaded coke zero. Makes a good cold drink.
ReplyDeleteI got a bottle of zero alcohol gin last Xmas. Horrible stuff!! Just make your authentic g and t and make it weaker. If you have to.
Wine is still cheap here. 6 cans of Alpha, Greek beer, is around 4.50 euros. A bottle of local wine, a litre for around 2.50 euros
Pleased you liked it Linda. I am not sure. I was thinking of going down the minerals route. I tried herbal teas and I was awake at 4 in the morning. Too much caffeine me thinks. Your drink prices are very similar to Spain and Portugal. Thanks for telling us about your prices in Poros.
ReplyDeleteI have tried alcohol free wine - vile stuff. A couple of our friends drink the 0% Guinness and say it's very good. I am not a beer drinker but have tried the Moretti Zero lager and it tastes fine.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how much they all cost but I know they are not cheap.
Thanks for your thoughts JayCee. The discount supermarket nonalcoholic wines we have tasted have all been ok. I can't get over how much the pubs charge for nonalcholic beer and wine. I think it's over the top. Saying that soft drinks have always been very expensive. Thanks JayCee.
ReplyDeleteIf I am not going to drink alcohol then I'll drink water. Sod alcohol free wine, waste of money and I didn't like it when my vegan friend brought some here. I couldn't see the point of what she was doing bring non-alcohol wine into the house. I don't drink much and stick to red wine when I do. I have never drunk alcohol free anything unless it's water. Thanks Dave.
ReplyDeleteFair enough Rachel. Thanks for your comment.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a drinker, really. December was dry. *thinks*. Pretty sure November was too...October...hmmmm...I actually don't remember when I last had a drink. Tim keeps a case of beer in the house and generally has one every night though.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say that I'd stick to unsweetened ice tea or water. I don't drink carbonated beverages either.
Gads, I am dull...
Far from it, Debbie!!
DeleteNot at all Debby. You have really got me thinking. I couldn't imagine going in a bar or before boarding a plane or seeing a rock band without drinking a beer. Perhaps it's my working class cultural upbringing. " I Live For The Weekend" :Triumph. I genuinely love beer. But I couldn't just have one. Thanks for your thoughts Debby.
ReplyDeleteIf I feel like coffee, or alcohol....I want the real deal!!
ReplyDeleteOtherwise a fruit/herb tea, water with a dash of lime, nothing full of sweetener or colour
Good drink suggestions GZ. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI hardly drink at all, and I'm very happy to have water when out, I don't like any 'cokes' or many fizzy drinks. I only drink black coffee through the day, never instant, preferring using beans and always strong, I sleep well my body must be used to the caffeine hits.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marlene for your comment. Like yourself I drink black real coffee in the morning. Then it's Lucosade or water and then at night I would normally drink some beer. Not that we have a good selection over here. I can't get English beer like Newcastle Brown Ale so it's usually Carlsberg in summer and Guinness in winter. It's good to have a break but I find the night times boring without drinking something to relax.
DeleteI love a drinking chocolate at night, keeps me warm, I do drink shandys in the summer months made with sparkling fruit flavoured mineral waters.
DeleteI love lager and bitter shandy when I visit Blighty Marlene in a beer garden in summer.
DeleteQ. What would you drink instead of alcohol?
ReplyDeleteA. Tea, coffee, water, "Diet Coke". I don't see the point of non-alcoholic beers and would not waste my money on them.
I think your drink suggestions are more sensible and less expensive. Perhaps we should grow some of that marrow banana plants to smoke this year😊? Who do you think will be the new Everton manager? David Moyes is favourite. I think Ryan Giggs would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteRyan Giggs would be a perfect programme seller. I would like to see David Moyes back in the manager's office. His heart has always been with The Toffees and at 61 he still has a lot to offer. There's no bullshit with him. He loves football and just gets on with the job. I hope Everton fans will welcome him back.
DeleteHe would sell some programmes YP. There is a close connection with United and Everton going off recent signings between the clubs in the last ten years or so. David Moyes is my age. Perhaps I could be in charge of their allotments growing healthy salads and soups for the lads? I just hope they don't get relegated and have the best ground in the Championship.
ReplyDeleteYou could be the Man United mascot - dressing up for each home match in a cumbersome Red Devils costume. Man Utd need all the mascots and lucky charms they can get. George Best must be turning in his grave.
DeleteUnited played excellent on Sunday against Liverpool and if a certain Mr Maguire had scored they have won. Manchester United have won twenty league titles. Even Liverpool haven't mastered that yet. I think its 13 Premier League titles to one.
ReplyDeleteYou are referring to ancient history Dave. This is 2025! But yeah, I agree, Man Utd rose to the occasion last Sunday.
DeleteThey did. I agree it's the next match that matters.
